We Are So Glad Jon Hamm’s Biggest Fear About His Career After Mad Men’s Ending Never Came True
- Jon Hamm portrayed Don Draper for years and became incredibly famous for the role.
- He was afraid that he would never get to act after he was done with Mad Men.
- Getting the chance to play Don Draper was life-changing for the Black Mirror actor.
American actor Jon Hamm found worldwide recognition for his role as Don Draper in the period drama series Mad Men. In fact, he won a Primetime Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards for his role in the show. Apart from the show, he has been a part of movies like Baby Driver, Top Gun: Maverick, The Town, Tag, and Minions.
Hamm once believed that Matthew Hoffman Weiner’s Mad Men would be the last time he would be working as an actor. Fans must be glad that it didn’t turn into a reality though. Although Hamm has an impressive career right at the moment, the scene is the opposite when he is in the shoes of Don Draper.
Jon Hamm Had His Inhibitions About What Would Become of His Career After Mad Men
Created by Matthew Weiner and produced by Lionsgate Television, Mad Men aired on cable network AMC from 2007 to 2015 for a total of 7 seasons. The casting includes amazing actors like Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, January Jones, Christina Hendricks, and many more.
In an interview with Today, Hamm was asked if playing Don Draper was hard and whether he had any strategy for coming out from Mad Men. He responded that it was indeed difficult to be a character who is always bummed out, referring to Don. He further added,
I definitely didn’t have a strategy. The only thing I kind of knew I didn’t want to do is play Don Draper again. I’m just like, well, I will never work again or I will never work at that level again.
Hamm seemed to be convinced that Mad Men would be the last the world would see of him on the screens. Luckily for him and us, that did not happen and he has starred in quite some great projects after the show ended.
Jon Hamm Has Don Draper to Thank For Changing His Life
Jon Hamm also admitted that playing Don has brought so many positive changes in his life. Before he grabbed a role in Mad Men, he was simply a jobbing actor and sometimes set dresser for p*rn films. Life wasn’t that benevolent for him in his career’s early stages.
Portraying Don changed his life completely. From struggling to find a place in society to an international celebrity with a lead role in Ben Affleck’s The Town, Hamm came a long way and the credit goes to his Mad Men character only. He even told The Guardian:
It’s nice not to have to worry about how you’re going to pay your bills. And it’s a problem I’ve had for far longer than I haven’t had it.
Hamm was cast in Mad Men when he was 36 years old and fortunately, the tables turned after that. Portraying Don Draper might have been tough at times, but it surely helped him earn everything that he had been wishing for.
