Poised to be the prison film after Shawshank Redemption, Sing Sing offers an insight into the correctional facilities where recreational activities are used to help people reform and lead a better life. The central character John “Divine G” Whitfield is played by Colman Domingo, who exhibits a great passion for comedy and theatre along with another inmate Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin.

The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival where people raved about the story and the execution alike. Based on a true story, Sing Sing gets its name from the correctional facility where the real incidents took place. The inspirational story has more to it than just a great story, acting, and direction. Everyone in the cast and crew of Sing Sing received equal pay. Talking about this magnanimous feat, Domingo told DiscussingFilm,

The model was based on the community model. We built this as a true collaboration. Where one person’s work ends, another person’s begins — it blurs the lines. In the making of Sing Sing, people truly gave a part of their own story. It made sense to have ownership, literal and figurative ownership of your story. So, that made sense for this model. It created an atmosphere in which people owned their work. People came into it with that rigor — not that they were actors, writers, production designers, producers, or assistants for hire, but you have ownership. This is your film.

While this model is sustainable only for smaller movies, it goes a long way in showcasing how the industry has the potential to be fair to each and every member involved in making a movie. With a smashing 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has given a tough fight to other grand blockbusters this year, including Deadpool & Wolverine and Dune 2. Regardless, the equal pay model takes Sing Sing one step ahead.

Domingo is pioneering equal pay and maintaining a high score on Sing Sing. Other big movies of the year enjoyed success, but who truly earned a fair share of the revenue? Reportedly, Ryan Reynolds was paid $30 million for Deadpool & Wolverine with Hugh Jackman earning $20 million. Reynolds had a profit-sharing agreement for the past two Deadpool movies so understandably, he stands to earn a bigger fortune with the success of the flick.

On the other hand, Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya apparently made $3 million and $2 million respectively for the grand sequel of Dune. in short, the cast enjoyed a hefty sum for their hard work on the movie while also being the faces of the franchise. The collaborative model of payment has been said to not work with big-budget movies because of the star power that pulls people to the theatres and proves their worth.
