Years after Smallville‘s conclusion, Lex Luthor actor Michael Rosenbaum finally revealed his idea for a spin-off series. The actor, his co-star, and pal Tom Welling were developing the animated show with Smallville‘s creators. This revelation came after ScreenRant asked Rosenbaum about the animated show they were developing, and if there’s a new way of bringing those days back when fans waited to see the next Smallville episode. The actor replied:

“When the time’s right, I think it’s something that’s a no-brainer, unless they have other ideas. We’d like to do it — the whole cast would like to do it. They would voice their own character from the show, and we have a concept of what the show is.”

Even though they have “a great idea”, Rosenbaum explained that the animated show needs to be pitched at the right time. However, the prime benefit of making this spin-off series is that the original actors would voice their characters, and this will likely gain fans’ attention. Unlike live-action series, animated shows consume less budget and there’s no limit to adding action scenes. On top of that, the whole cast of Smallville would return, which will likely help initiate the spin-off faster.

While Michael Rosenbaum shed light on pitching the animated show’s idea to Warner Bros, at the right time, the actor also shared that he and Welling wouldn’t mind a revival movie for Smallville. He clarified being open to portraying the iconic villain Lex Luthor, who emerges as Superman’s main adversary after pretending to be on his side.

However, there’s no official update on the revival movie, but Rosenbaum did share his thoughts and what might intrigue him if the makers ever create a film. He told ScreenRant:

“I asked Tom the other day, ‘If Al and Miles came to us and said, ‘We got this great idea for a Smallville movie… We were both like, ‘Yeah!” If it was right, I think that would be dope.”

The actor explained that he and Welling wouldn’t mind making a movie if the storyline was engaging enough. But because James Gunn’s DCU will work according to the plan of the filmmaker, a Smallville movie won’t happen anytime soon until the right time.

Smallville is available on Prime Video.
