“We were just exhausted with trying”: Jada Smith Justifies Why She Left Will Smith But Still Makes Him Act as a Couple in Public
Jada Pinkett and Will Smith are hailed as one of the power couples in Hollywood, known for their long-lasting successful careers and strong relationship. Being married in 1997, the couple was seen together at various major events and appeared to be in a strong, committed relationship.
However, adding a twist to the tale, the actress and talk show host Pinkett’s recent revelation about their long-time separated lives left the fans and media shocked. Despite this long-term mutual detachment, Pinkett and Smith never contemplated getting divorced.
Jada Smith reveals that Will Smith and she were exhausted with being in a marriage
Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, who met on the set of the popular TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, got married in 1997. While speaking with Hoda Kotb of Today, Pinkett during the preview of her memoir Worthy revealed that the couple, who have been together for more than 25 years, has been living “completely separate lives” since 2016.
When the interviewer inquired about the reason behind the separation, Pinkett explained that they hadn’t figured out how to be in partnership and were still trying.
“I think it’s just a matter of not being ready yet. Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in a partnership, and in regard to how we present that to people, you know? And we hadn’t figured that out.”

She later revealed they were struggling to find balance in the relationship and were “exhausted from trying”. She believes that both of them were stuck in a fantasy world in which they were striving to live up to some unrealistic expectations.
“I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted from trying. I think we were both kind of stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
Pinkett and Smith, who are living apart, don’t feel divorce is the right solution, and they promised that this “would never be a reason for us to get a divorce”. She explained in the interview that despite finding it difficult to be in a partnership, both of them still have “deep love for each other” (People) and have the confidence to work through their issues.

Jada Pinkett, in her recently released memoir Worthy, delves into the challenges they have faced in their marriage and how they have grown individually. Days after the revelation of her marriage, Will Smith reacted to the confession she made in her memoir.
The actor described it as his wake-up call for him. He explained that after being with someone for a long time, it is easy to become emotionally blind to their “nuances and subtle beauties”. He shared this in an email to The New York Times.
“When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, there is a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties.”
Smith also wrote a letter for Pinkett and penned for the Jay Shetty podcast, On Purpose, where she made her appearance to discuss her autobiography. A clip from her episode, which drops in full on Oct. 16, was shared by the Associated Press on YouTube.
During her talk, Jay Shetty read out the letter for which Smith expressed his love and support for her and humorously suggested she get some “Merlot and take a rest”.
“I applaud and honor you. If I had read this book 30 years ago, I definitely would’ve hugged you more. I’ll start now. Welcome to the Authors Club, I love you endlessly. Now go get some Merlot and take a rest.”
Pinkett laughed at Smith’s comments and expressed her appreciation for his note. She then reflected on their enduring affection and stated, “That’s why I can’t divorce that joker.”
