Reportedly, the Universal Pictures studio is known to meet the tougher demands of Christopher Nolan. The demands comprise a $100 million budget, total creative control, a 20 percent stake of the first-dollar gross, and a blackout period from the studio during which the company would not be releasing any other movie within the three weeks before or three weeks after his release.

Christopher Nolan and the Warner Brothers production house ran into a dispute after the latter decided to move ahead with their 2021 movie slate which included Tenet, with HBO Max, currently known as Max.

Christopher Nolan Slammed Warner Brothers For Their Irrational Business Decision

During an interview with the media house People, the British-American filmmaker, Christopher Nolan spoke about the shift in one of the biggest production houses Warner Brothers, and how it impacted the movie industry. He said- “Because other than the fact that it’s not a very rational business decision.”

He continued,

“The way in which they did it — they didn’t tell any of the filmmakers or any of the movie stars involved in those projects for 2021. These were people who spent years engaged on projects that were intended to be released for the big screen and for home video worldwide.”

Christopher Nolan blasted Warner Brothers and even termed their decision irrelevant with respect to the filmmaking objective. The 52-year-old director said-

“From my point of view, it’s all a bit irrelevant. I mean, the people at the studios, everybody knows that longer-term, people love going to the movies. They’re going to go back to movie theaters when it’s possible to do so.”

The decision of collaborating with the streaming outlet HBO Max came during the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, which inevitably affected the movie industry. Christopher Nolan had termed the irrational decision of the Warner Brothers as a short-term advantage. He mentioned-

“I think there’s a sort of jockeying for short-term advantage or trying to impress Wall Street. I’m very, very optimistic about the longer-term health of the movie business. 2019 was the biggest year ever for movies. I think [audiences] will come roaring back when it’s possible, but like so many aspects of our lives and businesses, and so forth, a lot of things are on hold right now because they have to be.”

The Universal Pictures-backed and Christopher Nolan-directed Oppenheimer is set to release in the theatres on July 21, 2023, worldwide. The star-studded cast of the much-anticipated project includes- Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, and Rami Malek
