“We’ve got room to make a colourful part”: Matthew McConaughey Refused to Play This Marvel Role After Feeling Humiliated
Marvel Cinematic Universe undoubtedly is one of the most successful film franchises in Hollywood. Its popularity has skyrocketed in recent times and the films or series based in the universe are loved all over the world. Therefore to have the opportunity to be a part of the MCU seems to be an ideal situation in Hollywood at the moment.
But as in every case, many actors have nevertheless passed on the offer of a role in the studio’s projects. One of these includes Matthew McConaughey who was a potential choice for the portrayal of the super-villain Ego in James Gunn-directed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The actor also opened up about his reason for the decision later on.
Why Did Matthew McConaughey Turn Down an MCU Role?
It is many actors wish to be cast in a Marvel studio project, especially these days. And considering the commercial success it has achieved over the years this makes absolute sense. But there have been many big Hollywood names who have turned down roles from the studio. In some cases, there have been schedule conflicts or the actors just decide not to for various personal reasons.
One of Tinsel Town’s biggest names, Matthew McConaughey is one such actor to turn down a prominent role in MCU. He was approached for the role of the supervillain Ego a.k.a Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2. But unfortunately the Interstellar actor turned it down and took on the offer to be a part of The Dark Tower film project which presented itself around the same time.
While discussing it, McConaughey revealed that it did not seem as if the filmmakers offered him the role because they thought he was a great actor. The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star explained saying,
“[Guardians of the Galaxy is] successful, and now we’ve got room to make a colorful part for another big-name actor.”
But in an alternate reality, if McConaughey had taken up the role, fans would have been able to watch him play Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) biological father and one of MCU’s greatest antagonists Ego.
