The Mortal Kombat franchise is based on the famous video game series of a similar name created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. The installment released in 2021 was the third installment and a reboot of the Mortal Kombat movie series following the commercial failure of Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which was released in 1997.
The 2021 released martial arts fantasy movie Mortal Kombat was faced with mixed reviews from its audience. When the movie was praised for its excellent and perfect casting of actors and fight sequences, on the other side the Mortal Kombat video game fans were devastated with the no inclusion of the actual tournament in the movie. Recently, producer Todd Garner announced that the sequel of the video game series movie adaptation is already in the production process.

Mortal Kombat is back in the media spotlight as after two years, producer Todd Garner took to social media to announce what the famous video game fanatics wanted to hear. Todd Garner announced on his Twitter account about the filming of Mortal Kombat 2 which has started in Australia.

He even expressed that this time in the sequel of Mortal Kombat, fans are expected to witness something interesting and exciting. Todd Garmer even assured that the creative heads behind the video game franchise have kept their ears open with respect to the feedback of their fans and critics and have tried their best to fix the 2021 reboot’s mistakes.
Not much has been revealed about the plot details of the next installment of the video game-adapted franchise. Lewis Tan’s Mortal Kombat 2 was officially shown a green signal in January 2022, almost a year after the first chapter’s successful theatrical run.
The first adaptation of the video game series Mortal Kombat was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson in 1995 with a similar name. Almost after three decades, the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie reboot saw great appreciation and response from its audience and critics. The casting of the movie was the highlight with Josh Lawson as Kano, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Writer Greg Russo, who has been replaced by Jeremy Slater for Mortal Kombat 2, had previously spoken about his plans for a trilogy in which the first movie too.
The Boy’s Karl Urban Will Play John Cage In Mortal Kombat 2
After the announcement of the video game adapted series Mortal Kombat’s sequel the fans are excited for its release. Producer Todd Garner even mentioned the multiple additions and subtractions that have been made by the writers while keeping the feedback in mind. In the sequel Mortal Kombat 2, maximum stars from 2021’s Mortal Kombat, including actor Lewis Tan as Cole and Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, are retained.
The Boys star Karl Urban has been associated with the video game’s movie adaptation. The actor has recently wrapped up the production of The Boys season 4, which will likely be premiered on Amazon in 2024. He would be seen playing the role of Johny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Karl Urban is also known for portraying the role of Skurge in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Ragnarok, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy in J.J. Abrams’ legendary Star Trek movies, and Éomer in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films.
According to the recent developments on the project, with a new set of characters being introduced in the sequel of Mortal Kombat, it is expected that less weightage would be given to Lewis Tan’s character Cole. Director Simon McQuoid will again step up behind the camera for Mortal Kombat 2, with a production department led by Todd Garner and the screenplay written by Jeremy Slater.
