David Lynch, the mastermind behind cult classics like Twin Peaks, has been a heavy smoker for most of his life. His on-screen characters, like Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) in Blue Velvet and Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) in Wild at Heart, are often seen puffing on cigarettes, which adds to the film’s signature mood.
However, this long-standing habit has come back to haunt him in the form of a severe case of emphysema. It is a lung disease usually caused by smoking, air pollution, or exposure to dust and chemicals at work.
David Lynch Battles Emphysema, Plans to Direct Remotely
David Lynch recently shared that his heavy smoking has caused severe emphysema, keeping him mostly confined to his home. Once smoking two packs a day, he now struggles to breathe even during short walks. The director said during an interview with Sight and Sound magazine:
I’ve gotten emphysema from smoking for so long and so I’m homebound whether I like it or not. It would be very bad for me to get sick, even with a cold. [He] can only walk a short distance before [before he runs] out of oxygen.
This condition makes it almost impossible for him to direct films, which demand long hours on set. Even with these challenges, Lynch isn’t planning to retire. The The 78-year-old willing to direct from home if needed, though he knows it’s not the best option.
He has admitted he used to enjoy smoking, but he’s now paying the price. He stopped smoking over two years ago and said his health is generally good, apart from the emphysema.

He’s excited about a screenplay he wrote called Antelope Don’t Run No More and also shared his hope about Snootworld, the animation he’s working on with Caroline Thompson. Even though Netflix recently turned down Snootworld, Lynch is determined to find support for both projects.
Even if he never steps onto a film set again, his reputation as a groundbreaking director is firmly established. Fans are eagerly anticipating his next project, whether he directs it remotely or not. Lynch’s last feature film was 2006’s Inland Empire.
