SUMMARY
  • Ryan Reynolds' support to his wife Blake Lively can cost him his career.
  • Majority of people on the internet have decided to side with Justin Baldoni.
  • Ryan Reynolds presented Best Film Award to Wicked.

Ryan Reynolds’ wife and actress Blake Lively is regarded as one of the most admired and influential actresses in the industry. However, her starring in 2024’s highly awaited film It Ends With Us alongside Justin Baldoni shifted the way the audience once viewed her. She was no longer the actress everyone admired but somehow she became the actress who was labeled as a ‘mean girl’.

Without reacting to any of the hate she received online, Lively continued to do what she does best but then on December 20, 2024, she filed a lawsuit against director and co-star Justin Baldoni, along with the producer and Wayfarer Studios.

Lively alleged that they created a hostile working environment and Baldoni hired a PR firm to launch a smear campaign against her. The New York Times reported the entire thing in a bombshell report. Baldoni in his defence had filed a $250 million lawsuit against the New York Times for its coverage of the accusations. The public seems to be leaning towards Baldoni at this point but Blake Lively will always have one person on her side.

Blake Lively, who starred in It Ends With Us as Lilly Bloom during the movie’s promotional tour, found her in hot water. She was dubbed ‘tone-deaf,’ ‘mean girl,’ ‘fake,’ and much more. All of these comments came after she did not address the movie’s theme, i.e., domestic violence, in her promotions; on the other hand, Justin Baldoni was talking about it.

The actress’ unflattering interviews from the past started to resurface on the internet, and the news of her and Baldoni having creative differences on set began to circle. The internet started to dislike Blake Lively, who has been one of the most admired and influential personalities in the industry. Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, are the Internet’s favorite couple, and suddenly she wasn’t a pleasant person to be around.

On December 20, 2024, she filed a s**ual harassment lawsuit against Justin Baldoni, also alleging that he hired a PR firm to destroy her image. Where everyone on the internet decided to speak their opinion, Lively got support from her co-stars and, of course, her husband, Ryan Reynolds. Reports by Life & Style stated,

Ryan is so proud of Blake for standing up for herself. She is going to see this fight through to the end.

It was reported by People in December that the Deadpool & Wolverine actor has been her rock, always adding that they have such a special relationship. Reynolds is very proud of his wife in so many ways. The publication mentioned that the couple is now simply focused on spending time with their kids, as she has said what she needed to say.

While it is very heartwarming to see a husband supporting his wife, in this case, the Internet has started to dislike Reynolds. People have started to state that the Hollywood couple wants the power to themselves. People have labeled the couple as ‘bullies’ as the reports of them wanting to take over the creative control of the movie came out.

Baldoni, in his lawsuit against New York Times, alleges that Reynolds had aggressively berated him in a meeting during the filming of the movie. He said that the actor launched into a tirade, which left Baldoni traumatized, adding that he was forced to apologize to Lively for allegedly fat-shaming her.

While presenting the award to Wicked, Reynolds took the opportunity to comment on standards that are set for women. He said (via Variety),

Wicked is indeed wicked. It dares to center on two powerful women. It examines a nuanced, complex relationship that has resonated with people for over two decades on stage.

Reynolds mentioned that stories about women seem to be held to a different set of standards, and that is to say that they’re often held to the standard women are held to in life. The actor further noted that women are supposed to be perfect and hide their strength, and must shape-shift or placate, but Donna Langley and Universal knew where and with whom to place their trust. He added that the trust had indeed paid off in this film.

The actor went ahead to playfully roast Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey, who plays Fiyero in Wicked, and said,

I have one note. I think we can all agree that Jonathan Bailey is objectively perfect, perhaps too perfect. Personally, I would have preferred fewer scenes featuring Mr. Bailey. Being good is great, but being great is bad.

Reynolds mentioned jokingly that one cannot go around indiscriminately spraying charisma all over and enrapturing the audience. He said during his speech that H.L.M.S., or Hollywood Leading Man Society, simply cannot sustain the standard or performance this high and asked Bailey to tone his brilliant acting skills down a little bit.

Wicked is available to stream on Prime Video, Apple TV+, and Fandango via VOD.
