Who Did It Better: 12 Iconic 90’s Movies/Shows And Their 21st Century Remakes & Reboots
Hollywood is obsessed with the idea of remakes and reboots of iconic shows and movies. But did they always succeed? Let’s find out.
Total Recall – 1990 & 2012
The 1990 original movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was cheesy but was still a great experiment. The fans loved it. The remake, starring Colin Farrell failed to capture the magic. The original wins.
Flatliners – 1990 & 2017
There is no way in hell the 2017 Flatliners remake wins this one. The 1990 movie is an underrated masterpiece that can never be replaced.
Beauty & The Beast – 1991 & 2017
No matter how much star power Disney puts into live action remakes, nothing beats the Nineties animated classics. There is no contest here.
Bangkok Dangerous – 1999 & 2008
The original Thai crime thriller won numerous accolades. The 2008 remake starring Nicolas Cage still wins because of the lead actor’s acting.
Roswell – 1999 & 2019
The original 1999 series and the 2019 reboot – Roswell, new Mexico, are inspired by the same series of best selling books. We have to give it to the original show because of the nostalgia factor. The reboot fails at several junctures where the 1999 show excelled.
Charmed – 1998 & 2018
The original Charmed series kept things casual. There was humor and drama at the same time. The new 2018 series took a largely different turn, making it serious and overly melodramatic. The original takes the cake here.
The First Wives Club – 1996 & 2019
The original 1996 movie starred Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler. It is considered an absolute classic. The 2019 reboot of the movie was a series that was critically panned for all the right reasons.
Power Rangers – 1993 & 2019
The 1993 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was not exactly an Oscar winning movie. But since it was a part of our childhood, the 2019 reboot had big shoes to fill. As expected, it bombed.
10 Things I Hate About You – 1999 & 2009
ABC’s 2009 reboot of 10 Things I Hate About You took many personal liberties the viewers did not like. The original show is considered one of the greatest shows from ABC’s library.
12 Monkeys – 1995 & 2015
They said it could not be done. The original 1995 neo-noir time travel thriller was a very bad example for a reboot. The 2015 series based on the movie was a hit. We would rate the series higher than the movie. It’s a great thriller everyone should watch at least once.
Aladdin – 1992 & 2019
Disney has recently gone on a remake spree for its iconic nineties classics. The 1992 Aladdin movie is a cult classic. Robin Williams nailed it as the genie. On the other hand, Will Smith could not recreate the magic of the original venture.
The Lion King – 1994 & 2019
Make no mistake. Both the movies are good. But some people claim the 2019 remake was utterly unnecessary. And nothing beats Disney’s Nineties animated icons. Nothing!! Period.
Point Break – 1991 & 2015
Point Break featured the one and only Patrick Swayze as the leader of a group of extreme sports loving Bank Robbers. The 2015 remake cannot even hold a candle to the 1991 masterpiece starring Swayze and Keanu Reeves in major roles.
The Ring – 1998 & 2002
The 1998 Japanese Horror movie was based on the 1991 book of the same name by Koji Suzuki. The 2002 remake did not just capture the magic, but used better special effects and characters. The jump scares are better in the 1998 movie but the overall scores are better for the 2002 remake.
