“Who had now driven her husband to madness”: Jada Pinkett Smith Leaves Will Smith Out in Cold, Takes Zero Responsibility for Chris Rock Scandal
One of the few couples in the business, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are known for being brutally honest with their fans about the ups and downs in their personal lives. The actress’ upcoming biography Worthy is one example of how they have discussed conveying their opinions to one another and the audience.
Jada Pinkett Smith has been sharing information about her relationship with actor Will Smith and how she has been coping with everything in the run-up to the release of her memoir Worthy. The actress’s memoir will be a candid account of her life, including the incident surrounding the 2022 Academy Awards.
Jada Pinkett Smith says people need someone to blame
Actress Jada Pinkett Smith, in an interview with People magazine, addressed the infamous 2022 Academy Award scandal where her husband Will Smith walked onto stage and slapped Chris Rock after he made a joke about Jada’s shaved head.
After the incident, Jada Pinkett Smith found herself being blamed for her husband’s actions, especially when she was filmed rolling her eyes at Chris Rock’s comment. She said,
“It was ridiculous in how far it went. But I also understood at the same time. Considering the false narrative that I had cheated on Will or I was like some adulteress, Will had never done that before. And I think that when we just look at human nature… when you look at the breadcrumbs, people need something to blame.”
The actress adds that people did not know what was happening behind the scenes and she wasn’t surprised that she was being blamed for the action, adding that she just understands the human nature of it.

Jada Pinkett Smith mentions that it’s easy to spin the story and blame the woman
During her interview with Hoda Kotb for Today, Jada Pinkett Smith was once again asked about being blamed for the actions that Will Smith took and people pointed out that her eye roll sort of pegged the actor to take some action when he was just smiling at the joke. To which she said,
“My honest opinion about that is that narrative had more to do with the false narrative that I helped to create on the ‘Red Table’. I did that eye roll, not so much for me — and I think this is important — but the fact that there could be a jab at alopecia.”
According to a New York Times cover story, the actress says,
“It was easy to spin the story of how the perfect Hollywood megastar had fallen to his demise because of his imperfect wife. Blaming a woman is nothing new.”
Jada added,
“I had to think about the narrative out there of me as the adulterous wife, who had now driven her husband to madness with the command of one look. I had to take responsibility for my part in aiding that false narrative’s existence. I also had to chuckle at the idea that the world would think I wielded that amount of control over Will Smith.”
The false narrative she is referring to was her entanglement with singer August Alsina when she and Will were briefly separated, which she revealed in an episode of Red Table Talk in 2020 and soon the couple came under the public radar.
Jada Pinkett Smith says it’s the family that anchors her and Will Smith’s union
In the same NY Times cover story, the actress also revealed that one thing that has kept both her and Will Smith, going is their kids and the love they have for each other. She said,
“We wanted to create a family we never had, and we did that. And we enjoy our family. For us, our marriage is like a cornerstone of that for now. Who knows in 10 years? We’ve tried everything to get away from each other, and we just don’t.”
The couple has been separated for seven years with the actress moving out of their house on her 50th birthday and mentioned that by 2016, both the actor and the actress were exhausted from trying to make things work, but she also clarified that she made a promise that there would never be a reason for them to get a divorce.
She tells Hoda, who asked her why don’t they amicably divorce,
“We don’t want to. We love our family. And we love each other. It’s more of a life partnership. Now, 10 years from now, Hoda, who knows? Right now, what we’re focused on, which has been so beautiful, is deep healing. Because of everything that’s transpired. What happens after that, I don’t know yet.”
Lastly, when Hoda Kotb asked her if there was a chance of reconciliation, Jada Pinkett Smith said that Will Smith is getting old, and she is going to be there for him. She has made it clear that she is always going to stick by her husband’s side but also let him have his own way.
Worthy comes out on 17th October 2023.
