Rick and Morty has become one of the biggest original animated series from Adult Swim, so a spin-off seemed like the best idea for going forward. Rick and Morty: The Anime is the first official spin-off of the series, which will see Morty and Rick take on a wild new aesthetic. While the adaptation has yet to reveal its release date, there has been a steady stream of clips for fans to get an idea about the adventure that is to come.

While Rick and Morty is diving into the anime world, the main series still has a few confirmed seasons ahead of it. The seventh season of Rick and Morty focused on the Smith family and saw some wild events take place as the conflict with Rick Prime finally met an end.

Adult Swim has not yet stated whether the stories in the upcoming anime spin-off will be in the same continuity as the main series. Since the Adult Swim series has featured so many alternate-reality Ricks and Mortys, it is possible that Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith of this anime series might have played some part in the Council of Ricks.

Adult Swim made two simultaneous announcements regarding the flagship franchise on January 22, 2024, neither of which drew warm receptions from the dedicated fanbase. Firstly, Rick and Morty will take more than a year off the air before returning with the eighth season in 2025. Secondly, the network revealed the first clip of in-show footage from the upcoming series Rick and Morty: The Anime.

Created by acclaimed animator and director Takashi Sano, the anime series will follow up on the five short films released between 2020 and 2021 that featured Rick and Morty in popular anime styles. However, each successive reveal of the full-length series has inspired negative reviews from the fan base who are disappointed by the art style.

Rick and Morty: The Anime is set to be written and directed by Takashi Sano, the genius responsible for the two previous anime shorts that focused on the Smiths in Rick and Morty Vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil).

Meanwhile, Telecom Animation Film is the studio responsible for the upcoming spin-off, which anime fans might know for their works on series like Shenmue The Animation, Tower of God, Baki, and more.

It looks like the English subtitles and a Japanese dub will be available for Rick and Morty: The Anime. This significant alteration is accompanied by a significant shift in the animation style, which marks a marked divergence from the animation of the main series’ first seven seasons. Fans of Rick and Morty are nonetheless excited to see this new adaptation of the Adult Swim hit, even with the alterations.

Rick and Morty: The Anime will premiere on Adult Swim and Max in 2024.
