“Why is my mom being so weird?”: Meryl Streep Was Forced to be Rude to her Daughter Mamie Gummer and Avoid Any Conversation With Her While Shooting ‘Ricki and the Flash’

Back in 2015, Streep decided to do a movie with her daughter, Mamie Gummer. However, her dedication to her role was something that took her daughter by surprise. In order to play her role to perfection, Streep stopped talking to her daughter altogether for some time.
Meryl Streep did not speak to her daughter for almost two months
Meryl Streep and her daughter, Mamie Gummer are very close to each other. So, when in 2015 they got the chance to work together on the musical comedy film, Ricki and the Flash, and they did not let it go. Gummer even revealed once in an interview that, “Everything aligned in the right way,” for that movie. However, there was a slight twist in the plot. Their on-screen characters were nothing like them. Streep played the role of Ricki who had abandoned her husband and children in order to chase her dreams.
Therefore, in order to make the characters seem more life-like, the director of the movie Jonathan Demme requested Streep not to talk to her daughter in real life as well. Demme once said in an interview, “It was like, ‘Please don’t be Mommy and Daughter for the next six weeks. Please. You be Julie who hates her mom. You be Ricki, who left her kids behind and you have that guilt.’”
Mamie Gummer was very confused her mother stopped talking to her altogether
In an interview, Meryl Streep revealed the full story of Ricki and the Flash. The Devil Wears Prada actress once revealed that her daughter got confused while filming the musical comedy in 2015. According to Streep, the director of the movie, Jonathan Demme did not have any kind of talk with her daughter, Mamie Gummer. So when Streep stopped talking to her altogether, it took her by surprise. Streep said, “Mamie told me two days ago, he never told her that he had said that to me, so she said, ‘Why is my mom being so weird?’”
The movie did not do so well at the box office but it was still an important project for Meryl Streep and Mamie Gummer. Ricki and the Flash was also the final narrative film of the director, Jonathan Demme before his death in 2017.
