Although there was once a version of Gladiator 2 which had Maximus resurrected by the Roman gods but this idea seems to be scrapped by the creators as the storyline is heading in a completely new direction. Even Russell Crowe has confirmed that the sequel of the movie picks up long after Maximus’ death which is estimated to be around 30 years. Talking about this Crowe said “I think where they’re picking the story up from, a young Lucius, stepping into the role of emperor. I think that’s a very smart idea within the world of the film that we created.”

Even though there is no official announcement yet, fans can still hope of seeing Russell Crowe as Maximus in Gladiator 2 through flashbacks or dream sequences, considering the fact that he is Lucius’ father.

“I don’t want to dwell on it too much because it does take me back to a period of time when obviously I was significantly younger. And you know, the rose-colored glasses of that experience now are perfectly crystallized. I look back on it and I loved every minute of it, and that wasn’t actually the case at the time. I do like being on a period movie set. Stepping into those sorts of costumes and those sorts of situations and stuff, it has great appeal to me. There’s a slight edge of jealousy that people get to have that experience that I had once.”

Even though the fans are still disappointed with Russell Crowe’s absence in the movie, these candid remarks by the actor have given the fans a glimpse into his emotional journey as an actor who is revisiting a pivotal moment in his career.
