‘Wicked’ Star Cynthia Erivo Supporting Dwayne Johnson’s Bizarre Singing in Theatres Comment Will Do the Film More Harm Than Good
- Cynthia Erivo is alright with people singing along to the songs in Wicked.
- Fans seem to disagree with the actress as they claim they would rather no one sings.
- Dwayne Johnson also made similar comments not so long ago and became the subject of immense backlash.
Wicked has taken the entire world of cinema by storm as it continues to bulldoze over old box office records and earn rave reviews from fans and critics. The cast of the movie is evidently doing an incredible job on its press tour.
Even so, every once in a while, things get a little out of hand when a detail about one of their lives becomes public or they make a comment that leaves fans flabbergasted. Erivo recently supported Dwayne Johnson’s comments about singing in theaters, but there is a huge chance that it will not end up in her favor.
Wicked Star Cynthia Erivo Does Not Mind People Singing in Theaters and Some Fans Do Not Seem Too Happy About It
Cynthia Erivo began acting professionally in the early 2010s and made her stage debut around the same time. Her Broadway debut came in 2015 with her role in The Color Purple. She won a Tony Award and a Grammy Award for her performance in the play and made her big screen debut in 2018 with the heist film, Widows.
Erivo is currently gracing the screens as Elphaba in the fantasy musical, Wicked, which also stars Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Bowen Yang. Recently, at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, she gave an interview to Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, and Savannah Guthrie, who hosted NBC’s broadcast of the annual spectacle (via TODAY).
During the interview, among other things, she addressed how she feels about people singing along to the songs in the film in the theaters. She said:
Good! I’m OK with it. We spent this long singing it ourselves, it’s time for everyone else to join in. It’s wonderful.
Now, the Harriet actress might be perfectly fine with fans belting out their favorite songs as they watch the movie in theaters, but the same cannot be said about some other fans who have openly expressed their criticism about this.
At a single along screening sure, but the whole reason people are going to see the movie is to hear great singers sing, not randoms in the theatre

No.

Theater etiquette matters and people who sing at a non sing a long showing should be kicked out.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE ENDORSING SINGING DURING A MOVIE
— harv (@harvv) November 28, 2024
She may be but I am not! I didn’t pay to hear anyone sing but the people in the movie.

Erivo’s thoughts on this are understandable, but the wishes of the moviegoers who do not want to sing along should also be respected. Singing along in the theaters can disrupt other people’s experience of watching the movie and also result in a stressful situation for those who feel anxious in public places but are still willing to go to the cinemas to watch the film.
Dwayne Johnson Encouraged People to Sing Along While Watching Moana 2 in Theaters
The Outsider actress’ comments have come after Dwayne Johnson made a similarly controversial statement regarding theater etiquette. While attending the UK premiere of Moana 2, The Rock chatted with BBC on the red carpet and said:
Sing! You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you’ve gone into a musical, and you’re into it. Sing.
Soon after his statement went viral, fans openly expressed their disapproval. Here is what some of them had to say:
If I pay for a John Wick movie I should get active in there then
— Kaida 🌊 (@khaliltooshort) November 25, 2024
If you want to sing along, go to a concert smh 🤦♂️
— JBond (@jbondwagon) November 25, 2024
OR ppl should do the exact opposite lol. I paid money to watch the movie… not to hear someone butcher the songs out loud 💀😭 pic.twitter.com/DQJ8YVOKdw

What about the people who paid their hard earned money to watch the movie in peace.

Stars like Erivo and Johnson encouraging singing in the theaters spells trouble not just for the people who are there to enjoy the movie in peace, but also for the audience in the theater next to theirs who are most probably watching a different movie than theirs. The solution to this can be sing-along screenings for people who are interested in singing, but singing along in a theater in general does not sound like a very enticing idea for people who don’t want to sing.
