The splatter film genre has always divided opinions in Hollywood. The graphic and gore nature of these horror movies usually appears off-putting at first sight, pushing a significant number of moviegoers away from the get-go and subsequently denting their performance at the box office. The ones who manage to become a success usually take a lot of time before picking up the pace and receiving their due praise.

The Toxic Avenger is one such movie, which upon its first release failed to rope in viewers. But the 1984 horror comedy eventually came to be acknowledged as a cult classic. And almost four decades after its first chapter – which also led to three more sequels – Mitch Cohen’s film is getting a reboot.

Much like the genre itself, the Macon Blair-directed movie will feature Peter Dinklage, who divided plenty of opinions himself with his portrayal of Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones. To this day, GOT fans argue whether Lannister should be considered a hero or a villain.

Fans React as the First Look of Peter Dinklage’s Toxic Avenger Character Drops

In The Toxic Avenger movie, Peter Dinklage is set to portray Winston Gooze – a downtrodden janitor turned superhero labeled the Toxic Avenger after an accident that sees him fall into a radioactive waste.

The first look of Gooze, who’s ready to go to any lengths to cure his terminal illness after the so-called sophisticated society around him abandons him, is now out, as it shows the deformed monstrous hero carrying a luminescent green mop (probably his trademark weapon).

Early reactions suggest fans can’t wait to see Dinklage in a whole new gore avatar.

The movie will also feature Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon among others, and will premiere in September during Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas.

Why Peter Dinklage Once Called Out Disney for Their ‘Backward’ Project

Judging by wild reactions on social media to just a little snap of Dinklage wielding a mop in The Toxic Avenger it’s fair to say his fans are pretty loud. And Dinklage is no different.

The 54-year-old, who swayed much stronger and bigger characters in Game of Thrones through his cunning words and left everyone dazzled with his wordplay as Cyrano de Bergerac in the movie Cyrano, once made the headlines by bashing Disney for their “f*cking backward” live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

“I was a little taken aback by [the fact] they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” he told podcaster Marc Maron in 2022.

The GOT legend, who has a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia, further added: “You’re progressive in one way but you’re still making that f*cking backward story of seven dwarves living in the cave. What the fuck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Judging by the synopsis of The Toxic Avenger, it appears the movie would also try to shed light on the issue of outcasts – in its own uniquely gore way. Gooze, who’s initially shunned from society for being a ‘freak’, rises as a superhero from toxic.
