Grown-ish, the hit teen comedy created by Kenya Barris and Larry Wilmore, has been part of our lives since 2018. It gave us a fresh, hilarious, and sometimes emotional look into college life through Zoey Johnson’s eyes. As the first Black-ish spin-off, this show nailed it. Growing up, falling in love, and figuring life out—it had it all!

The Grown-ish finale was everything fans could’ve wanted — drama, love, and closure. Let’s break it down. In the second-to-last episode, Aaron Jackson (Trevor Jackson) proposed to Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi). Instead of jumping into his arms, Zoey panicked and ran off.

She needed time to think and turned to her friends for advice. Enter Nomi, Ana, and Vivek, who helped her figure things out. Meanwhile, Luka (Zoey’s other love interest) tried to shoot his shot, confessing his feelings over FaceTime. But Zoey shut it down, saying they were better as long-distance friends.

The real drama happened during Junior’s graduation boat party. Zoey and Aaron finally sat down to talk. Zoey admitted she freaked out because she wasn’t ready for such a big step but realized she couldn’t imagine life without him. Aaron, being the sweet guy he is, felt the same.

Then came the big moment: Aaron re-proposed, this time with Junior’s class ring. But Zoey wasn’t about to let him do it alone. She got down on one knee and proposed back, saying (per YouTube), “Only if you marry me, Aaron Jackson.”

And just like that, the couple tied the knot right there on the boat, surrounded by family and friends. The finale ended with a big celebration, showing how far the characters had come over six seasons.

Here’s the bad news: Grown-ish is not coming back for Season 7. In March 2023, Freeform announced that Season 6 would be the final season of the series. Kenya Barris, the show’s co-creator, himself said in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter):

We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement. To be able to watch Yara, Marcus and our entire grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor.

For nearly a decade, the -ish series (Black-ish, Mixed-ish, and Grown-ish) has been a staple for fans. But all good things must come to an end. Season 6 was split into two parts.

Part 1 premiered in June 2023, and Part 2 wrapped up in March 2024, giving fans time to prepare for the finale. While it’s sad that the show is ended, the creators made sure to give every character the closure they deserved.

Why isn’t there a Season 7 of Grown-ish?

The decision to end Grown-ish after six seasons wasn’t made lightly. According to Freeform and the creators, the show had reached a natural conclusion. Zoey’s journey from a confused college freshman to a confident adult came full circle, and the show ended on a high note.

It’s a bummer that Grown-ish is ending, but it’s even bigger news for the Black-ish franchise. Since the original Black-ish kicked off in 2014, it’s been a huge part of Disney and its networks, bringing in tons of viewers and praise.

Along with Grown-ish, Black-ish gave us the prequel series Mixed-ish (which lasted two seasons) and even tried to launch another show, Old-ish, but that never happened.

So, with Grown-ish ending, we’re not just saying goodbye to Zoey and Aaron, but to the whole Black-ish world. For almost a decade, at least one of these shows has been on TV, so it’s a big deal.
