With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ and ‘It Ends With Us’, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Continue an Iconic Hollywood Trend Started By Bruce Willis and Demi Moore
- Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have once again proved that they are the 'It' couple.
- Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends with Us' success at the US box-office makes the couple revive a trend from decades ago.
- Bruce Willis and Demi Moore started the trend with their respective movies back in 1990.
Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine has broken several records coming out at the top at the domestic box office. Now, his wife, Blake Lively’s romance drama It Ends with Us appears to be on the same path as the superhero flick. It is safe to say that fans of the couple are having the time of their lives with this coincidence.
This iconic trend of Hollywood couples having blockbuster movies released around the same time first started more than three decades ago with Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. Although the couple’s not together anymore, Moore and Willis continue to be friends even through some of the hardest times, setting an example for other couples.
Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively Bring Back a Hollywood Trend from Three Decades Ago
There is no doubt that Reynolds and Lively’s relationship is a match made in heaven. The duo first crossed paths back on the set of Green Lantern in 2010. They became fast friends but did not start dating until a year later when they went on a double date but with different people.
Both of them had recently become single since Reynolds’s marriage with Scarlett Johannson ended that same year and Lively had also broken up with her on-and-off boyfriend Penn Badgley, who was her Gossip Girls co-star. Once Reynolds began dating Lively, there was no going back for either of them. They got married in 2012, and are parents to four kids now.
The major reason why they make for one of the most beloved Hollywood couples is that they are each other’s biggest cheerleaders, and show up for each other’s big moments without fail. This easily makes them couple goals for fans.
They have recently established another milestone together as their films Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends with Us have won the domestic box-office showdown. While the former movie earned $54.2 million in ticket sales, the latter debuted with $50 million (via The Associated Press).
History seems to have repeated itself in more than one way. This double win for the Reynolds-Lively household is reminiscent of last year’s Barbenheimer phenomenon in which movies of two very different genres were competing at the box office. Additionally, this is also not the first time that a Hollywood couple has ruled the box office with two different movies as Demi Moore and Bruce Willis did this three decades ago.
Demi Moore and Bruce Willis Were the Trend Starters
Moore and Willis’ romance was just as heartwarming as Reynolds and Lively’s. The former duo married in 1987 and split amicably in 2000. In 1990, they both starred in movies that made it to the top of the US box office. Willis had appeared in Die Hard 2 and Moore in Ghost, with the former leading the competition.
As good as it is to see Reynolds and Lively bring back the trend, it would be even more exciting to watch it continue. Some Hollywood couples that could ride on this trend are Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky, Tom Holland and Zendaya, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, and, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Hopefully, we will get to see it happen sometime soon.
