“You could’ve been awful”: Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow Were Beefing in Iron Man? The Marvel Stars Finally Address the Rumors
Iron Man 2‘s main goal was to give Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark yet another opportunity to take center stage. But it also set the platform for other characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to shine. The best example of this is probably the introduction of Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson, who later joined the Avengers team.
Moreover, Gwyneth Paltrow, who played Pepper Potts, got to appear on-screen with Johansson in Iron Man 2. And 13 years after the release of the Marvel film, the actresses are dispelling rumors that they got into an alleged fight on the set.
Scarlett Johansson recently appeared on The Goop Podcast to join Gwyneth Paltrow, and the two talked about their time working on Marvel movies. Paltrow debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Pepper Potts in the 2008 film Iron Man, a role she later played in two Iron Man sequels and other Avengers films.
Johansson made her MCU debut in Iron Man 2, which featured Black Widow for the first time. The two actors allegedly fought on set, according to online reports at the time.

Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow Dispelled Rumors Of Conflict In Iron Man 2
When Scarlett Johansson visited Gwyneth Paltrow‘s The Goop Podcast to discuss her career, the topic of their work on Iron Man 2 eventually came up.
The actresses discussed their experience working on movies for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also addressed the alleged feud rumors that surfaced while they were on the set of the 2010 Iron Man sequel.
When Paltrow mentioned how people have questioned her about whether she and Johansson had actually fought while filming the movie, the latter responded as follows:
“Is that a rumor? You were so nice to me on that movie. I was so petrified. You were so nice to me!”
After being chosen to play Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the movie, Johansson made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut. When the inevitable topic came up, Johansson exclaimed, “You were so nice to me!” as she questioned Paltrow about the accuracy of the rumor.
“You could’ve been awful. I was so out of my comfort zone on that movie. I’d never done anything like that before. Plus, you had established such deep friendships.”
Both Actresses Enjoyed Each Other’s Presence On The Set
But as Scarlett Johansson made clear, Gwyneth Paltrow was very gracious, and there was no fighting between them at all. The Infamous actress, who played the sole leading lady in Iron Man, remarked right away how nice it was to talk to another actress. To quote her:
“We were so psyched you were there. I was so happy to have another woman around.”
Johansson’s character was initially introduced as Natalie Rushman, a Stark Industries employee who briefly served as Tony Stark’s personal assistant. It was later made clear, however, that her true identity was that of an undercover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.
Despite acknowledging that her character in Iron Man 2 was “so s*xualized,” the actress had a positive experience working on this particular MCU film and got along well with Paltrow.
Even though Natasha Romanoff passed away in Avengers: Endgame, viewers got to see her one last time in her stand-alone film, set between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Scarlett Johansson has appeared in nine Marvel films overall (including her un-credited cameo in Captain Marvel).
Paltrow, on the other hand, has appeared in seven of the films in the series; her final scene as Pepper Potts was in Avengers: Endgame, at Tony Stark’s funeral.
