Freaky Friday, a modern classic version of a 1970s Disney tale that perfectly embodies the 2000s film vibe, turns 20 years old. The film, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, remains a fan favorite for its hilarious and heartwarming story about a mother and daughter who switch bodies. Even though the on-screen events draw our attention, it’s often the off-screen stories that hold their own special intrigue. Some of the key figures in the movie shared some of their fresh set tales.

While we enjoy watching the movie, off-screen stories are sneak peeks into the friendships, discoveries, and surprises that were shared among our favorite stars. One such behind-the-scenes story pops up: Jamie Lee Curtis once kissed Chad Michael Murray to make Lindsay Lohan more comfortable having their first on-screen kiss. Chad Michael Murray, Lucille Soong, Ryan Malgarini, Rosalind Chao, and Christina Vidal, together with director Mark Waters and producers Andrew Gunn, sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to discuss fascinating stories of behind-the-scenes tales from the body-swap comedy’s set.

Probably the most overwhelming moment for me was when we were shooting in Malibu at the end of the movie for the wedding, and that was a big moment because that was Lindsay’s first onscreen kiss. I didn’t know. I had no idea, and so they’re coming to me like I’m some kind of pro or something, and I’m like, ‘You realize you’re talking to a 19-year-old?’ I have no idea what I’m doing, but I’m sure I’ll take the lead. So, I remember everyone was nervous, and they were like, ‘Hey, would you just talk to her today and kind of do stuff to relax her and stuff, make a couple of jokes so she didn’t think about it?

The actor Chad Michael himself has recounted their first on-screen kiss. During an appearance on Busy Tonight, Chad Michael Murray revealed that his Freaky Friday costar Jamie Lee Curtis kissed him to make Lindsay Lohan more comfortable about the fact that she would have to have her first kiss on screen.  In an interview with THR, the actor Murray, who portrayed Lindsay Lohan’s love interest in the film, recounted, “I was Lindsay Lohan’s first kiss.” Murray explained that the teen superstar was nervous about the big moment.

The anticipated scene was tense for the entire cast, and  Lee Curtis stepped in to save the day. Murray explained that Lohan was nervous during the pivotal scene in the film.  Lee Curtis’s presence and support helped ease the tension on set. The ex-Gilmore Girls star went on to say that Jamie’s professionalism and talent truly saved the day, and her chemistry with Lindsay Lohan made the film a fan favorite.

Finally, we got close, and Jamie Lee — just God bless her — she’s like, ‘Lindsay, it’s fine. It’s easy. You have nothing to worry about. Just kiss him. Just go for it. Just get it out of the way now.’ And she was really nervous, and she didn’t wanna do it, and she goes, ‘Look,’ and she grabbed me by the back of the head, and she kisses me, and in that moment, I knew I had made it. (Laughs.) I’m not gonna lie. My dad was incredibly jealous and still is to this day — as he should be. (Laughs.) But she made everyone feel comfortable and made Lindsay feel comfortable.

As Freaky Friday turns 20 in the year of its release, another question arises about its follow-up movie. Curtis revealed the chance of a sequel is considered.  It has been reported that there are some plans ongoing to feature the stories of  Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Although there is no confirmed release date for the production schedule, Lee Curtis says, “It wouldn’t be unexpected to see cameras start rolling in 2019. It’s good to control expectations, though, as no official announcement has yet been made”.

If Freaky Friday 2 ever happens, both stars will likely be excited to return. And as for fans, will be exciting after a brief hiatus when those memorable characters are back in their old roles. It’s fun to wonder whether they want kissing assistance anymore.
