Michael Caine told NPR that when he was just starting out in his career, he showed up on set drunk. Thinking he was nailing the scene that called for a tipsy performance, he confidently stepped in front of the camera. The producer, however, wasn’t quite on the same page.

“What are you doing?” the producer asked, his voice laced with disbelief. Without hesitation, Caine confirmed he was actually drunk, saying, “I’m drunk in this scene, sir.” To his surprise, the producer replied:

I know you are drunk, but you are not a drunk—you are an actor trying to be drunk.

Stumped by the producer’s words, the star sought clarification. The producer explained that a real drunk person can’t control their actions, while an actor pretends to be drunk by overdoing the wobbling and slurring. This revelation changed Caine’s approach to acting forever.

The producer’s words hit home for Caine. He realized it wasn’t enough to just mimic a drunk or act out a trait. Instead, he started digging into what really makes a character tick. That’s how he landed major roles, such as Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy.

In a chat with Radio Times magazine, Michael Caine shared that his career could have gone down a troubling path. But luckily, his second wife, Shakira Baksha, was there to help.

The movie mogul confessed that when he was starting out, the stress of landing roles and the spotlight took a toll on him. This led him to drink way too much. However, Caine credits Baksha (whom he married in 1973) for saving his life. He said:

I was a bit of a piss artist when I was younger. I used to drink a bottle of vodka a day and I was smoking too, several packs a day. Without her, I would have probably drunk myself to death. I tell her everything. I was famous when I met her, but I couldn’t have gotten this far without her.

In 1971, Caine spotted Shakira Baksha, a former Miss World contestant, in a Maxwell House coffee commercial. Later, a friend mentioned she lived just a mile away from him in London, making their chance encounter seem even more like fate.
