The 17 million members of the film fan app ‘Letterboxd’ announced the annual year in review, and they unanimously decided to crown Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi blockbuster, Dune: Part Two, as the best movie of last year. Not only that, but they have also ranked Zendaya and Willem Dafoe as the most-watched actors. As per the ratings, Villeneuve’s sci-fi sequel got a higher ranking than the original one.
Zendaya was seen in two movies – Dune: Part Two and Challengers. On the other hand, Dafoe’s four movies were released last year, including Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Kinds of Kindness, Saturday Night, and Nosferatu. The 69-year-old actor dethroned Timothee Chalamet from the position with his workaholism and passion. However, this announcement has left the internet divided.
Zendaya and Willem Dafoe became the most-watched actors last year
As per Letterboxd, Zendaya has become the most-watched actress for the second year running. Her performances in Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two and Luca Guadagnino’s sports drama Challengers were widely appreciated. Her films also got hugely recognized at this year’s Golden Globes awards. While many people think she deserves to be crowned with the title, there are a few netizens who are opposing the decision, saying Hollywood is force-feeding her to the audience.
On the other hand, the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actor Willem Dafoe gave a legendary performance in Nosferatu. Now, social media users are reacting to this announcement and flooding X (previously known as Twitter) with their opinions. Here’s what they posted online:

Did Dune: Part Two become the best movie of last year?
As per a THR report, the director of Dune: Part Two responded to the news. Denis Villeneuve shared his excitement and happiness, and said that he will sleep well. He further added,
The idea that there’s a community, the Letterboxd community of film lovers, cinephiles, that are sharing film lists and their love and their passion, it brings me hope for the future of cinema. Frankly what I love about that is it’s coming from people who don’t give a shit about me. They’re just talking about the movie, you know? Thank you everybody. It goes straight to my heart.
The site’s users ranked Dune: Part Two higher than the original movie with a 4.4 out of 5 average rating, while Dune: Part One got a 3.9 rating. Alongside the sci-fi blockbuster, many small films also got recognition, as per Letterboxd. The second-highest ranked feature of 2024 was I’m Still Here, followed by the Thai dramedy How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies, directed by Pat Boonnitipat.
Boonnitipat shared in a statement that it’s beyond his expectations, and continued, “As a filmmaker and also as a cinephile, growing up I always liked to watch movies from smaller countries and smaller film industries. It gave the feeling that everything is so new and so fresh.”
