In the world of entertainment, the use of Easter eggs and paying homage to iconic and nostalgic scenes, characters, or stories is quite common. In Our Little Secret, one such scene could possibly transport fans back to the days of teen comedy Mean Girls.

Our Little Secret is not just another American holiday romantic comedy film. It holds much more significance. Lindsay Lohan plays Avery, who meets her boyfriend’s family during Christmas and is struggling to manage her past relationship. The movie is directed by Stephen Herek and written by Hailey DeDominicis.

In Mean Girls, Lohan portrayed Cady Heron, a naive teen who lands in a challenging situation in high school after coming from Africa. This film was released in 2004 and scripted by Tina Fey, and it truly became a pop culture phenomenon of a generation.

In Our Little Secret, Lohan has a slight reference to Mean Girls in one of the scenes where Lohan’s character, Avery, is seen talking to her boyfriend, Cameron, played by Jon Rudnitsky. In the scene, she talks about one of Cameron’s childhood friends, Sophie, and how his mother likes her.

When Cameron asks her if she is jealous of Sophie, Avery says, “No..she’s just tall and pretty.” Cameron replies, “Is she tall? I hadn’t noticed,” to which Avery quickly fires back with, “Oh, so you think she’s pretty?”

This small interaction seems like a direct reference to Rachel McAdams’s Regina George’s conversation with Lohan’s Cady Heron in Mean Girls. In the scene, Regina says to Cady, “You’re, like, really pretty.” She then replies with a “thanks,” to which Regina says, “So you agree.. you think you’re really pretty?”

It doesn’t feel like a mere coincidence. This cheeky reference is for the audiences who have been with Lohan since her early days. Moreover, her tone and the way she delivered the dialog seem quite similar to Regina George, which will definitely bring nostalgia to Mean Girls fans.

Lindsay Lohan and Tim Meadows Together Again

Mean Girls was released 20 years ago, but the fans never got to see Lohan and Tim Meadows together on screen until Our Little Secret. Meadows, who featured as Principal Duvall in Mean Girls, now features as Stan, a family friend in Lohan’s new movie.

Lohan looked forward to working with Meadows again as she expressed her excitement in an interview with Tudum,

Tim is just such a wonderful human being. I just love being around him. We had a few moments where I could not stop laughing.

Meadows too echoed his feelings and expressed his happiness to see her after so many years in the interview.

It was really lovely to see her again. The surprise to me – if any – was just how we both enjoy each other’s company. And she asked me to take a photo together first!

Even though both Lohan and Meadows starred in the 2024 Mean Girls musical, they have never interacted on screen. It was only in Our Little Secret that their characters share genuine on-screen interaction after 20 years.

The thing that made Mean Girls really special was that it was an entertainer with some real insights into teenage social dynamics. Lines like “On Wednesdays, we wear pink” and “That’s so fetch” became the go-to lines of the young generation at the time. And a playful nod like this just caters some more fan service to that generation.

Mean Girls and Our Little Secret are available to stream on Netflix.
