Recent comic storylines have revealed ominous new dimensions to the traditionally noble X-Men hero Colossus, foreshadowing the character’s potential to go to much darker places. Through mental manipulation by his brother and willing deception for an illusion of peace, Colossus is fundamentally changed in the comics. As the metal-skinned mutant starts down a more sinister path, it raises intriguing questions about how dark Colossus could become as he enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Which X-Men Character Seeks Redemption in the Comics?

According to Screenrant, in the main Marvel universe, Colossus was forced to betray the X-Men and murder innocents by his brother Mikhail Rasputin, who had taken mental control over him. To break free, Colossus had to kill Mikhail, an action that went against his gentle nature. With guilt over his actions weighing on him, Colossus may now seek redemption and have difficulty regaining the trust of his teammates.

Meanwhile, in the Ultimate universe, Colossus willingly deceived the public and perpetuated meaningless wars as part of the villainous Illuminati. This shows his capability to ignore morality for promised stability and prosperity.

Despite the different contexts, both storylines reveal Colossus is capable of going down much darker paths than ever before. The traditionally noble hero now has a more complex, ominous edge to his character.

How Dark Could the MCU Take Colossus?

As Colossus eventually joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe through the integration of the X-Men, there is huge potential to explore this newly emerging darker side. While Colossus was a purely sympathetic character in Deadpool, the MCU could tap into his moral ambiguity from the comics.

Perhaps Colossus gets manipulated by Mr. Sinister or another villain, turning him against the X-Men. Or he allies with the shadier side of mutant kind, believing the ends justify the means. The seeds have been planted for Colossus to move away from being a boy scout and do much more questionable things in the name of the greater good.

Seeing the traditionally dependable Colossus go down a darker path would subvert expectations for Marvel fans. But it could make for compelling storytelling, adding more complexity and internal conflict within the mutant team.

However, there may be resistance to Colossus shedding his purely noble image, especially if he goes so far as allying with major villains. The comics have shown Colossus is indeed capable of going to those places, but whether audiences are ready for that shift remains to be seen.
