$25M Rich Former Hollywood Mogul Harvey Weinstein Won’t Be Retried for Alleged Attacks on 2 Women, Remaining Charges Dismissed
The infamous face behind one of the biggest movements #Metoo, in Hollywood Harvey Weinstein, is back in the spotlight again. The 70-year producer was convicted of sexual assault and r*pe charges against an Italian actress and model. The Los Angeles court sentenced him to 16 years of imprisonment. The notable producer is already serving a 23-year sentence for sexual assault and r*pe charges by multiple models and actresses in New York. The long list of sexual molestation and r*pe allegations against Harvey Weinstein brought a revolution in the history of Hollywood.
People held massive protests around the world. Actors, directors, producers, models, and famous names came forward and reported their sexual abuse against the Shakespeare In Love producer. 2017 saw the rise in the #Metoo movement in leaps and bounds- people came out and spoke about sexual assaults and violence at their workplace.
No Retrial For Harvey Weinstein On Sexual Assault Charges
Recently the Los Angeles court announced that they will not go ahead with the retrial of the Oscar-winning producer Harvey Weinstein, This came to light when the r*pe and sexual assault accusations made by the wife of the California governor Gavin Newsom and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Newsom, and a Filipino- American model Lauren Young.
“I wanted the retrial because even though the defendant has been convicted in New York and California of crimes against other women, I wanted him to be held accountable for what he did to me,” Ms. Young wrote in the letter, which was released by her lawyer, Gloria Allred.
The jurors could not come up with a unanimous verdict based on the allegations imposed by the respective women. The charges were deadlocked and totally dismissed against Harvey Weinstein as announced by Lisa B. Lench, the judge of the Superior Court in Los Angeles.
The Rise Of The #Metoo Movement
The #Metoo movement gained momentum, amidst the accusations against Harvey Weinstein. Women across the globe came out and spoke about sexual misconduct at their workplaces. They posted their stories on various social media platforms with the hashtag- me too. The sexual victim survivors celebrated the coming out of each other and it soon became a widespread movement worldwide.
The innumerable sexual harassment and r*pe cases that have been under the covers, all came to light. Reputed actors like Jennifer Lawrence, Sandra Bullock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Salma Hayek, and Rose McGowan came forward accusing the infamous predator of Hollywood of non-consensual s*x, r*pe, sexual abuse, and inappropriate advances. Harvey Weinstein was accused by four women in Los Angeles following the convictions in New York. With Harvey Weinstein being sentenced to almost 40 years in jail, the #Metoo movement has seen the face of the rising sun.
