The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is one of the most popular franchises in the world. It is also one of the most beloved as it features characters from the iconic Marvel Comics. The MCU started in 2008 with the movie Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr. as the titular superhero. Since then, the franchise has made many movies and series, most of which have been very successful.

In the process, a number of characters from the comic book series have emerged and made their appearances in the MCU as well. However there have been some powerful MCU characters that are weakened for the sake of comedic relief. That said, let’s take a look at five characters that were turned into a joke by Kevin Feige

Adam Warlock

Adam Warlock made his surprise appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 which was released earlier this year. In the comics, Warlock is directly tied to the Soul Stone. Therefore, he is granted powers on par with one of the Infinity Stones. His powers continue to grow with each rebirth he experiences, similar to how Ultron is an almost insurmountable threat.

Despite the fact that Adam Warlock is supposed to be one of Marvel’s most powerful superheroes, his on-screen adaptation has diminished powers.

Drax

In Marvel’s comics, Drax is single-minded in his pursuit of Thanos. He was created at the hands of Titan, Kronos, and possesses the powers to potentially defeat Thanos. However, in the movies, it is hard to imagine him doing so without the help of other characters. He first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014. Contrary to his character in comics, Drax is one of the funniest characters in the MCU and seems to be more focused on comedy than revenge.

MODOK

MODOK first appeared in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania this year. One of his biggest features was omitted from his cinematic rendition which was his supreme intellect. The character was also stripped of his powerful psionic capabilities in the movies, instead being given a chair that simply shoots lasers.

It’s safe to say that the Marvel Cinematic Universe decided to lean heavily on him being a comic relief rather than a villainous character.

Surtur

Surtur first appeared in Thor: Ragnarok back in 2017. He is the lord of one of the Nine Realms – Muspelheim. And it makes sense why his power measures up to his fellow realm leaders. However, that wasn’t the case in his cinematic appearance when he went up against Thor. Thor made short work of Surtur (without outright killing him), but the truth is that Surtur could even go up against a full-powered Odin.

As portrayed in the comics, Surtur’s dominion over the realm of fire is capable of beating Thor. He has godlike abilities and can manipulate energy on a cosmic scale, with vulnerability only to ice.

Justin Hammer

Justin Hammer first appeared in Iron Man 2 back in 2010. In the movie, Hammer is portrayed as a useless tech billionaire which begs the question of how he made his billions to begin with. However, Hammer was more than capable of besting Tony Stark in the comics.

Justin Hammer went as far as successfully hacking into Tony Stark’s suit, engaging in shrewd corporate espionage, and actually being good at his job. While Sam Rockwell’s portrayal of the now-imprisoned Hammer was still a highlight of the Marvel movie, there was plenty of opportunity for him to be more than a hapless rival who was incapable of one-upping his nemesis outside of enlisting external help.
