Since there were no multiple of Allans in Barbie, and Cera played the inactive character, he’s ready to reprise the role with a whole new movie, that mainly focuses on Allan. The film enthralls with a unique and captivating story, featuring the stereotypical doll finding her origin. Throughout the film, one character who is unexpectedly ignored by viewers is Michael Cera’s Allan, for whom the actor wishes an entire spinoff project.

This is the era of spinoffs where acclaimed movies and shows expand their stories and provide depth of understanding of a character. But that doesn’t mean that fans would enjoy a Barbie spinoff featuring Allan and his story. Michael Cera, who played the inactive character in last year’s summer blockbuster, shared his idea of crafting a film solely focusing on Allan and completely ignoring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling: the actors behind Barbie‘s triumphant success.

During The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the host asked Cera about the spinoff rumors, to which he replied:

“I think it would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there.”

Following Cera’s desire for Allan’s spinoff movie, fans were quick to share their opinions to let the actor know if his idea would work or not. And surprisingly some are even begging to withdraw this idea, as it sounded quite funny and unwanted to them.

Before Michael Cera was cast as Allan, it was Jonathan Groff previously lined up for the role. But since fate had something else in mind, the character was helmed by Cera. The actor expresses gratitude for being a part of Barbie and describes it coming “out of nowhere” for him. Despite his lesser screen time, Allan was unique for not having replicas.

When asked about making a sequel to Barbie, director Greta Gerwig denied a response over it. Even Margot Robbie shared that they put everything to make the film as incredible as possible, and currently have no plans to craft a project related to Barbie. The Babylon star told AP that:

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something…Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”

The film swept accolades this award season and even earned an Oscar nod to America Ferrera for Best Supporting Role. However, despite contributing as the leading character and producer of Barbie, Margot Robbie along with Greta Gerwig have been snubbed in the Best Director and Best Actress in Leading Role categories. Apart from the leading categories for Academy Awards, Barbie has received around eight nominations for the upcoming event in March.

Barbie is available on Max.

Frequently asked questions

What spinoff idea did Michael Cera suggest?

Michael Cera proposed a spinoff film centered entirely on Allan, his minor character from Barbie, since the movie established there was only one Allan among many Kens. Asked about it on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Cera said, “I think it would be kind of a weird movie, but I’m there.”

How did fans react to Michael Cera’s Allan spinoff idea?

Fans overwhelmingly rejected the idea online, with reactions like “No thanks,” “Please no,” and disbelief that the pitch came from Cera at all. The response was framed as largely negative, with many finding the concept of an Allan-centered film unnecessary or unappealing compared to the original.

Who starred in the original Barbie movie?

Barbie starred Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, with Greta Gerwig directing the film to become a cultural phenomenon. Michael Cera’s proposed spinoff would notably exclude both leads, focusing instead on the previously unexplored story of Allan, a side character in the original.
