Dune: Part Two has been in the news ever since the fantasy drama went into production. The second installment of Timothee Chalamet-led sci-fi saga is one of the most anticipated projects of 2024. After its theatrical release on March 1, 2024, Dune: Part Two is gradually on its way to becoming one of the biggest blockbusters of early 2024.
However, Dune: Part Two failed to earn more during its initial days of release due to a hilarious reason.
Dune: Part Two Fails To Earn More At The Box Office Due To The Shortage Of Seats At The Theatres
After the theatrical release of Dune: Part Two, movie experts and critics cannot stop talking about its terrific cinematography and great performance by the ensemble cast. Despite securing a box office collection of $182.5 million during its first weekend, Dune: Part Two failed to earn more due to a hilarious reason. As reported by CNBC, the second chapter of Dune generated massive ticket sales, but the IMAX theatres ran out of seats. IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said-
“The only reason it wasn’t higher is we ran out of seats. The lesson is that if you take a beautiful visual experience, a good story and you put it in the hands of a brilliant filmmaker with an IMAX camera, you’re going to get very good results.”
Josh Grode, the CEO of Legendary Entertainment believes that word of mouth has played a major role in generating bumper ticket sales for Dune: Part Two. He said-
“I think this is a movie where you know the word of mouth is going to carry it. It is a stupendous piece of filmmaking. There’s no other way to say it. I’ve just about run out of adjectives. We have to have all creative stakeholders aligned and support the vision. I think everybody is very excited and really enjoying this moment and if Denis [Villeneuve] gets the script right and he feels that he can deliver another experience on par with what we’ve just completed then I don’t see why not,”
Dune: Part Two was made on a production budget of $190 million.
Christopher Nolan Compares Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two With Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Denis Villeneuve’s happiness knew no bounds when Christopher Nolan praised Dune: Part Two. The Oppenheimer filmmaker went on to compare the second chapter of Dune with the reputed intergalactic saga Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. During an interview with Games Radar, the Arrival director revealed that he would have never dared to compare Dune with the Star Wars franchise. He said-
“It’s a comparison that I would have never dared to do myself. I think it’s a beautiful compliment because Empire Strikes Back is by far my favorite Star Wars movie. So, it’s like, coming from Chris [Nolan], an incredible compliment.”
Christopher Nolan had said-
“For me, I don’t think it says too much to say that if Dune: Part One was Star Wars, this to me is very much The Empire Strikes Back, which is my favorite of the Star Wars films. I just think it’s an incredibly exciting expansion of all of the things you introduce in the first one.”
Denis Villeneuve is gearing up for the third and final chapter of Dune. According to the French Canadian director he would slowly move with Dune: Messiah as he believes in quality over quantity with respect to his craft.
Dune: Part Two is currently running in the theatres.
