While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has not been doing well recently, especially with the critically panned Madame Web, released earlier this year, it certainly has some great movies like the Venom series.
The franchise is mainly centered on characters from the Spider-Man comics and the inclusion of one detail about Venom from the comics led to the making of a very hilarious scene in Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Early on in the film, we see Venom convincing Eddie (Tom Hardy) to go out to find food, specifically chocolate.
However, when they reach the nearest store, much to their disappointment, they find out that there is no chocolate. The only other option? Brain. This is where the comics come into play because in the 1996 arc of Venom: The Hunger, Venom’s insatiable urge to eat brains and Eddie’s adamance about not eating those landed the latter in a rather ugly situation. This was as Venom left Eddie naked in a desolate part of New York City to go get what it needed.
In the movie, Eddie manages to convince Venom that they cannot eat the departmental store manager’s head, and that is how they end up at a live chicken shop to eat chicken brains instead. Although Venom initially expressed its annoyance about eating chicken brains, it ate them and later, expressed its disgust once again.
Why Is Venom Obsessed With Chocolate and Brains?
One might think that chocolate and brains are rather bizarre choices for foods, but these are not random food items that Venom likes to eat. In Venom: The Hunger, after having the fight with Eddie, Venom leaves in the form of a Xenomorph-esque snake while Eddie lands in a hospital run by cannibalistic monster Dr. Paine.
Dr. Paine, who also loves to consume brain, finds out that Brock’s brain is deficient in a chemical called phenylethylamine. There is no telling if Brock’s brain was deficient in the chemical because Venom was eating it, or it was not producing enough as it was. So, the only other option the Symbiote had was other brains.
Chocolate was the second source of phenylethylamine, and after escaping the hospital, Eddie manages to get a hold on Venom after a lot of struggle. They reconcile towards the end, and it is revealed that the brain produced a lot of the chemical when one is in love. This leads to Eddie promising Venom that he will lead a life filled with love, and co-exist with his symbiote companion.
