Christopher Nolan tried to jump-start his filmmaking career in the mid-90s but did not get the support needed to get his projects off the ground. Consequently, his first feature film, Following was released in late 1998. His second film was 2001’s Memento, which turned out to be his breakthrough.

The fourth entry in his filmography was Batman Begins, which was released to critical and commercial success. It was followed by two sequels. These movies also received worldwide acclaim for using practical effects instead of going for Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). One interesting fact about all three movies is that they were released in June/July.

Inception, Dunkirk, and Oppenheimer were also released in July in the years 2010, 2017, and 2023, respectively. In fact, while The Dark Knight Rises premiered on July 20, 2012, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer were released on the same date (July 21) six years apart.

According to Deadline‘s recent report, Nolan’s next film is set for release on July 17, 2026. The Academy Award-winning director is allegedly working with Universal Studios again after the record-breaking success of Oppenheimer. Sources have also revealed that this movie will get an IMAX release which is not very surprising considering his love for the IMAX cameras.

A dozen films later, it is unlikely for Nolan’s fans to be surprised when he does something he has done many times before. His love for IMAX cameras, practical effects, and working with the same A-listers has become very apparent over the years.

Reportedly, the A-lister attached to this new film is Matt Damon with whom Nolan has worked on two films – Interstellar and Oppenheimer – so far. Previously, the Tenet director has re-partnered with actors like Cillian Murphy (6 films) and Christian Bale (The Prestige and The Dark Knight trilogy). The filming of the upcoming film is scheduled to begin in early 2025.
