The long-standing debate between WIT Studio’s two masterpieces, Attack on Titan and Vinland Saga, centers on which is the better show overall. The comparison comes naturally, as both MCs in each series start as vengeful characters. But the paths they take as they grow older are in stark contrast to one another.
As it turns out, neither can be put above the other if we take every aspect of storytelling into account. There are places where Vinland Saga shines far brighter than Attack on Titan, while at the same time, AoT has pulled off heights that Vinland Saga‘s narrative could never achieve. Why Vinland Saga Is Better Than Attack on Titan

1. Vinland Saga Has Much More Narrative Depth Than AoT
Not only does Vinland Saga have a good plot, but the way it is presented is extremely nuanced. The narrative has significantly more depth than Attack on Titan as a whole. While AoT’s primary philosophy revolves around geopolitics and injustice, Vinland Saga tackles more fundamental human themes, shifting from a revenge-fueled fantasy to an introspective narrative. The way it also represents the horrors of the cycle of violence truly makes the series edge out AoT in this aspect.
2. Vinland Saga Offers Better Character Development Than AoT
Each character in Vinland Saga goes through phenomenal character development, and all of it feels more natural and raw. That is exactly where it edges out Attack on Titan. The character development in AoT often feels driven by the ever-changing high-stakes of the storyline, but in Vinland Saga, characters such as Thorfinn, Canute, Askeladd, Einar, and Arnheid each grow introspectively on their own. This type of character development feels more real, which once again makes Vinland Saga better.
3. Vinland Saga Is More Inspirational Than Attack on Titan
There have been many moments in Vinland Saga that are capable of making you reflect on your own outlook on life. Right from Episode 1, with the Halfdan incident, to the very end of Season 2, with Thorfinn and Canute’s confrontation, almost every episode has moments that can make you introspect. Erwin from AoT was surely inspirational to some degree; it still feels like a fleeting moment in a series comprising many episodes. So we can’t really put AoT ahead of Vinland Saga in this respect. The latter simply clears when talking about inspiration.
4. Vinland Saga Has Better Pacing Than Attack on Titan
None of the episodes in Vinland Saga feel slow or rushed. It has a consistent pace that keeps the hype alive after every episode. Therefore, for a binge-watch session, Vinland Saga is much more recommended. In Attack on Titan, however, some of the earlier story arcs, especially Season 2, may feel quite slow-paced to many, making viewers want to drop the show. But Vinland Saga doesn’t face any such issue.
5. Vinland Saga’s Revenge Plot Feels More Grounded Than AoT’s
The primary protagonist of Vinland Saga, Thorfinn, goes through one of the best character developments in anime. His journey from being a vengeful killing machine to a caring individual, as we see in Season 2, is simply phenomenal. Eren also starts his journey to avenge his mother’s death, but the ending of Attack on Titan doesn’t meet the expectations his character arc promised us. Also, Eren intentionally leading his friends to kill himself and saving the world may feel a bit too similar to Code Geass‘ iconic ending, which also deducts a few points from Attack on Titan.
Why Attack on Titan Is Better Than Vinland Saga
It wasn’t luck that made Attack on Titan one of the most popular anime of all time. The series truly deserves all the praise it receives, and certain aspects of it make it better than Vinland Saga. So, here they are:
1. Attack on Titan Has Better Plot Twists Than Vinland Saga
When it comes to plot twists, Attack on Titan takes the easy win. The sheer number of twists you’ll experience from Season 1 up until the very end of the series is insane, with each one greatly enhancing viewer engagement. Vinland Saga, on the other hand, remains much more stable throughout, with only Season 1 ending on one major plot twist. So, if you just want to experience the sheer thrill of watching a nail-biter, Attack on Titan should come first on your priority list.
2. AoT Boasts More Intricate World-Building Than Vinland Saga
Vinland Saga is roughly based on the real world, as it is set in the Viking era. So it was easy for fans to familiarize themselves with the plot. But Attack on Titan is set in a completely fictional world, and the whole presentation of walls guarding the remaining humanity from the Titans certainly grabbed everyone’s attention. And after the basement reveal, the world-building was taken to another level. The fact that we were, along with the main characters, deceived into believing that humanity outside the walls had been wiped out, only to discover that there were entire nations beyond them, was simply mind-blowing.
3. Attack on Titan‘s Action Is Unmatched by Vinland Saga
Attack on Titan‘s storyline demands action, and well, WIT Studio went above and beyond with it. While Vinland Saga also has great one-on-one sword and fist-fight action, or simply the brutality of war, Attack on Titan‘s ODM gear calls for the kind of animation that is unique to itself. Especially the Levi vs. Kenny and Levi vs. Beast Titan fight scenes, which are truly among the greatest in all of anime.
4. AoT Offers Constant Higher Stakes Than Vinland Saga
It isn’t so surprising that Attack on Titan has higher stakes. The existence of the Titans alone makes up for it. Along with the whole Marley & Ymir’s past revelation, countless moments in the series demand your full attention. Look away for a second, and your favorite character might just die. Thus, it makes for a nail-biting watch session, which Vinland Saga doesn’t come close to matching. As a result, Vinland Saga falls another point short of what makes Attack on Titan so popular.
5. AoT Excels in Foreshadowing That Vinland Saga Lacks
Finally, what puts Attack on Titan above Vinland Saga is its narrative genius, especially with all of its foreshadowing. Vinland Saga, in comparison, may feel more like a straightforward tale of becoming a better human in a blood-soaked era. But AoT’s entire plot was written with much more care, as events that take place at the very end of the series were hinted at right from Episode 1. No other story that we know of does foreshadowing better than Attack on Titan.
