That’s one of the reasons why fans adore so many WIT anime, and the full list would be huge.
But out of everything they’ve made, we’ve picked arguably 10 of their best works and ranked them based on their influence on the modern anime landscape, as well as how good their overall storylines truly are.
10. After the Rain Is WIT’s Most Ambitious Take on Romance
Not many romance anime delve into building a proper relationship, but After the Rain takes every bit of its narrative with the utmost seriousness. Though the main couple here are quite far apart in age, the story doesn’t straight up romanticize its main characters, but instead takes its time focusing on their personal growth. Thus, it feels quite real despite having a controversial take on romance. But because of its slower pace and limited narrative scope, we had to rank it at the bottom of the list.
9. Seraph of the End Offers a Post-Apocalyptic Vampire Story
As one of the best cult classics of all time, Seraph of the End really does a great job presenting its post-apocalyptic world. In fact, it beautifully mixes a vampire storyline with rich world-building. The world itself becomes the central focus of the narrative, and uncovering the mysteries surrounding it becomes one of the MC’s primary goals. With constant revelations and action, it keeps the plot engaging. But due to its inconsistent pacing, it ranks only 9th on the list.
8. Hozuki’s Coolheadedness Is an Episodic Masterpiece
Though some may have initial reservations about episodic anime, Hozuki’s Coolheadedness might change their point of view. Even though it is episodic without an overarching plot, the anime remains extremely entertaining because of its themes alone. The way it combines Japanese mythology with workplace comedy is simply genius, and the jokes are quite relatable even if you’re not from Japan. But then again, since it doesn’t have a larger plot, it is ranked 8th on the list.
7. Spy × Family Is One of the Rare Family-Friendly WIT Anime
WIT Studio rarely produces a family-friendly anime. Either there’s too much gore, too much nudity, or a serious plot that doesn’t make for a couch watch with others. But Spy × Family is an exception to that trend. While it still has action and blood, the overall plot involving Yor, Loid, and Anya trying to form a loving family despite their odd circumstances makes for a really wholesome watch. But because it lacks the thematic seriousness of some other entries, it is only ranked 7th on the list.
6. The Ancient Magus’ Bride Stands Out for Its Fantasy World
A true fantasy anime was once so rare to come across, but The Ancient Magus’ Bride filled that void back then and is still revered as one of the best the genre has to offer. Its rich fantasy world-building truly deserves all the praise. Plus, the main reason it is this high on the list is its seamlessly woven narrative involving folklore, magic, mythology, and romance. What else could anyone want? But the anime’s slow pacing and introspective nature may not be for everyone; hence, it ranks 6th.
5. Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song Delivers a Plot-Heavy Sci-fi Story
The sheer scale of Vivy’s storyline allows it to secure a place in the top 5. Not only is it a masterclass in telling an intricate sci-fi narrative, but it also involves time travel, a century-spanning plot, insane action animation, and whatnot. Rarely do we come across a good sci-fi anime nowadays with thought-provoking philosophical themes, but Vivy does so in every episode. In fact, it even has a satisfying conclusion that many anime in the genre lack. Thus, it’s only natural that it ranks so high on the list.
4. Ranking of Kings Gets Way Darker in the Later Story Arcs
If “don’t judge a book by its cover” was a WIT anime, then Ranking of Kings would be the perfect example of this proverb. At a glance, it may seem like a kids’ fantasy story, following a prince’s journey to become the next king. But as we move forward in the storyline, the anime turns much darker, to the point you’d question whether it’s the same anime anymore. Its political intrigue and moral ambiguity, paired with rich character development, truly deserve the 4th spot here.
3. Great Pretender Is a Complete Mystery-Thriller Package
When it comes to mystery thrillers, Great Pretender is not only one of WIT’s most ambitious projects but also one of the anime industry’s most ambitious projects as a whole. The setting switches between multiple countries, involving a lovable cast of characters who are basically con artists doing their business all across the globe. The MC, on the other hand, often gets played by his peers, but their banter and the conclusion of each heist will keep you hooked to the screen. Thus, it easily secures a place in the top 3.
2. Attack on Titan Stands as WIT Studio’s Biggest Project Yet
Winner of the Global Impact Award at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Attack on Titan is truly WIT Studio’s biggest project so far. Had they not made the first three seasons of the anime so popular, the anime might never have become this popular. In fact, it’s hard to imagine some other studio doing justice to AOT’s dark fantasy setting. The studio’s vibrant choice of colors, soundtracks, and ODM gear animation are still unmatched to this day. Therefore, AOT more than deserves the 2nd spot on the list.
1. Vinland Saga Broke the Curse of Bad Seinen Adaptations
Before the Vinland Saga anime came into being, very few major seinen manga had received a decent adaptation. Even the original Berserk wasn’t up to the standard, Kingdom’s initial seasons didn’t perform well, and Vagabond hasn’t received an adaptation even now. But WIT Studio broke this curse of poor seinen adaptations with Vinland Saga Season 1.
Although the studio changed in Season 2, WIT’s work on Season 1 had already pushed the series toward its inevitable success. The entire Prologue Arc was crafted to perfection, masterfully presenting the horrors of war.
