But because the power system becomes much more complicated in the later arcs, it can be difficult to follow. And that’s where this guide comes in.
From the basics of chakra types and chakra control that form the foundation of Naruto’s power system to the late-series power-ups like the various Kekkei Genkai and Dōjutsu abilities, here we’ve jotted down every major piece of information you need to know about Naruto’s power system. Chakra: The Foundation of Naruto’s Power System
Chakra in Naruto basically works like mana, serving as the energy pool that every individual possesses. It acts as the source of all ninja techniques. The amount of chakra one has varies from person to person, and this capacity can be increased through training.
Although everyone inherently has chakra, they must be able to control it precisely to put it to use. Once mastered, they can alter the form of chakra to unleash powerful energy attacks such as the most iconic Rasengan. They can even combine physical strength with chakra to unleash powerful techniques.
Interestingly, chakra has several different elemental affinities, and most shinobi are born with an affinity for a particular one. Based on these chakra types, they can use techniques related to various elements such as fire, water, earth, and more, which we’ll cover later in this guide.
NOTE: There are actually more uses for chakra than just offense and defense. Certain types of chakra mastery can even allow a shinobi to perform Medical Ninjutsu, Sealing Techniques, Space-Time Ninjutsu, apply Curse Marks, and much more.

The basics of becoming a ninja in Naruto may sound easy. Even you can become one, but how you’d like to train will determine which jutsu class you belong to. These are basically the three main ninja combat arts in Naruto:
1. Ninjutsu
For those who want to specialize in chakra-related abilities, Ninjutsu would be their go-to choice. Shinobi belonging to this class use chakra to create powerful offensive, defensive, or supportive techniques, ranging from elemental attacks to even space-time techniques.
2. Taijutsu
If you want to be a combat-focused ninja, then Taijutsu would be your forte. It focuses on hand-to-hand combat, relying primarily on physical strength, speed, agility, and martial arts. While chakra is still used, it is never the main focus.
3. Genjutsu
Outside of conventional battle tactics, Genjutsu users rely on psychological and illusory abilities. Shinobi who specialize in this art can manipulate an opponent’s chakra flow through their nervous system to interfere with their senses. It can also alter their perception through powerful illusions. Sounds pretty broken, doesn’t it?
Sage Mode: If a shinobi is able to blend in natural chakra, that is, chakra directly from nature, with their own chakra, they can create Senjutsu Chakra, and with proper training, they can potentially unlock Sage Mode. It is an advanced transformation that helps Shinobi enter a heightened state of power. Only a handful like Hashirama, Jiraiya, Naruto, and Kabuto ever mastered it.
Every Elemental Jutsu/Ninja Technique in Naruto
At its fundamental level, every jutsu, or ninja technique, is derived from one of the five basic chakra natures. And it is from these that Naruto’s power system truly starts taking its iconic form. Here are the five basic elements:
1. Fire Release (Katon)
As one of the strongest basic elements, Fire Release converts chakra into flames. It particularly excels in both destructiveness and area control, though it provides fewer defensive abilities.
2. Earth Release (Doton)
As you might already guess, Earth Release jutsu is arguably the best when it comes to defensive techniques. It manipulates the ground and rocks to create barriers and can even reshape the terrain to suit the user’s needs. That said, its raw destructive power is also quite commendable.
3. Wind Release (Fūton)
Wind Release can prove to be extremely deadly, as it can generate razor-sharp gusts and cutting attacks. You definitely wouldn’t want to stand in its way. Because of this, it is considered one of the most lethal chakra natures for long-range combat.
4. Water Release (Suiton)
Manipulating water can give you multiple advantages over other elements, such as Fire and Earth. It can also be used defensively to control the battlefield. And if a shinobi is skilled enough, they can even create water without relying on a nearby water source.
5. Lightning Release (Raiton)
As the final basic elemental chakra nature, Lightning Release is the flashiest of them all. As the name suggests, it allows users to channel chakra into electricity, capable of unleashing powerful lightning strikes. It can also greatly increase the user’s attack speed.
Kekkei Genkai: The Ultimate Bloodline Techniques
After learning the basics of elemental chakra natures, things become a lot more complicated with Kekkei Genkai. It doesn’t follow a regular pattern, as Kekkei Genkai are rare inherited abilities passed down through certain clans.
But their reach is far and wide. They allow members of certain clans to combine the five basic chakra natures and create advanced elemental releases, such as Wood Release (Water + Earth), Ice Release (Water + Wind), Lava Release (Fire + Earth), and Explosion Release (Earth + Lightning). Some even combine three basic chakra natures, such as Dust Release, which fuses Earth, Wind, and Fire.
Every Type of Dojutsu: Eye-Based Ninja Techniques
Dojutsu are also a type of Kekkei Genkai, which is passed through bloodlines. In fact, these are some of the most broken techniques associated with the users’ eyes.
1. Byakugan
The Byakugan grants nearly 360-degree vision, the ability to see chakra pathways, and exceptional long-range perception.
2. Sharingan

3. Mangekyō Sharingan

4. Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan

5. Rinnegan

6. Rinne Sharingan
The Rinne Sharingan acts like the mother of all dojutsu, possessing the ability to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi on the entire world.
7. Tenseigan
The Tenseigan combines the powers of the Byakugan and Ōtsutsuki chakra, granting enhanced sensory abilities, Truth-Seeking Orbs, and Tenseigan Chakra Mode.
8. Ketsuryūgan
The Ketsuryūgan specializes in blood manipulation and powerful genjutsu, making it one of the rarest dojutsu in the Naruto world.
9. Kokugan
The Kokugan is a relatively new Otsutsuki dojutsu that allows its user to manipulate space-time and instantly shrink objects through powerful ocular techniques.
Summons & Tailed Beasts: The Greatest Shinobi Companions
In Naruto, a shinobi can form contracts with powerful mythical creatures and animals and can summon them when in need. But even among the summons, the tailed beasts are known to be the strongest, as they are literally ancient and powerful entities.
Jinchuriki: This needs a special mention because certain gifted ninja, like Naruto, can even harness the power of these ancient creatures within themselves. They are called Jinchuriki, which are arguably some of the strongest beings in the entire series.
