There are many characters in the anime Bleach, and they all fall into many different race categories, which can make it really confusing to tell who is what. Initially, there were only humans and Soul Reapers, but then Tite Kubo introduced variations in Soul Reapers and a whole different race called Quincy.
Let us take a deeper look at all the major races in Bleach anime and manga, describing everything that we know about them. Let’s dive in.

1. Humans – The Primary Residents of the Human World
Humans are exactly as they sound. In the world of Bleach, humans are practically the most normal people who live in the World of the Living. The human body is made up of Kishi and contains a soul, and bound to it is the Chain of Fate. Technically speaking, Humans are the opposite of Hollows, and the two cannot usually interact.
However, humans are not always totally normal. For example, a very small percentage of humans can develop a really high amount of Reiryoku. They are then classified as high-spec humans. What this amounts to is that these high-spec humans can see souls. For example, Karin Kurosaki, younger sister of Ichigo, is considered a high-spec human being.
2. Fullbringers – The Humans Born With Fullbring
Next up are Fullbringers, who are spiritually aware human beings but with a special ability called Fullbring. The Fullbring ability allows these special humans to interact with and manipulate the souls that exist in all physical matter (yes, physical things also have souls). They can also sense Reiryoku of other beings such as Hollows and Soul Reapers.
In reality, their powers more closely resemble Hollows than Soul Reapers, and that is because they each have a parent who survived a Hollow attack before they were even born, and that Hollow’s powers remained in their parent’s body and were received by them upon birth. Furthermore, it was revealed in the Can’t Fear Your Own World light novel that every Fullbringer carries a fragment of the Soul King. This is exactly what attracts the hollows in the first place.
Some of the things they can do include manipulating objects themselves, such as tea, which they consider to contain souls. Another primary difference between them and Soul Reapers is that they use their bodies to power their abilities, which means they have to train their physical bodies extensively.
3. Quincy – The Spiritually Aware Human Beings

Quincy are another type of spiritually aware human beings, and are notable for being able to manipulate Reishi and destroy the existence of Hollows instead of purifying them, which is why they are considered the total opposite of Soul Reapers. It may sound good on paper, but it actually messes up the balance of life and death in the universe. Furthermore, their souls are vulnerable to hollow poison, which makes them different from other humans as well.
Yhwach, the strongest villain in Bleach, is also a Quincy. As for their history, long ago, they were scattered all over the human world and were always fighting the Hollows. It is not known what their actual origin is, but Isshin Kurosaki claims that Yhwach is technically the father of every single one of them. However, at the same time, there is information regarding Quincy being present even before Yhwach, which is something Yhwach himself believes in.
4. Souls – The Spirits of Dead Humans
Souls are wandering spirits of dead humans in the World of the Living and are spiritual beings not to be confused with spiritually aware beings such as Quincy and Fullbringers. There are actually many different kinds of souls that can all be considered different races as well due to being so different from each other.
Pluses are the simple everyday ghosts in the Human World. They are, simply speaking, dead people. There is a chain, called the Chain of Fate, that comes out of their chest and connects them to their living body. If the chain is severed, the soul cannot return to its body and continue living.
The other kind of soul is Jibakuri, which is a spirit who is not able to leave the human world because he or she regrets leaving something behind. They are very similar to Pluses, except for the fact that they can sometimes look extremely horrifying. The third type is Tsukirei, which is another kind of spirit that cannot leave the human world due to regret. The difference is, however, that they are bound to a person.
Hollows, Arrancar, and Soul Reapers are a form of Souls themselves, but they are much more fleshed out and require proper exploration; see them below.
5. Soul Reapers – Guardians of the Three Worlds in Bleach
Soul Reapers, or Shinigami, are probably the most important people in the entire story. They are the guardians of the three worlds who protect and guide souls going through the cycle of transmigration between the world of the living and the Soul Society, which is why they are called Balancers as well. This should give you an idea why they don’t like Quincy, as they break that balance by destroying hollows.
Their bodies are composed entirely of pure Reishi, possess a high Reiryoku capacity, and are normally invisible to normal humans who are not spiritually aware, just like other souls. Humans die and enter Rukongai as souls, but if they have good latent abilities, they are trained to become Soul Reapers. However, exceptions exist; for example, Byakuya was born in Soul Society.
6. Visored – Shinigami With Hollow Powers
Visored are technically Soul Reapers, except for the fact that they have acquired Hollow powers. Normally, one can’t even tell them apart from an average Soul Reaper by their looks. To use their Hollow Powers, they don a Hollow Mask, which allows them to integrate their Shinigami powers with Hollow Powers. This is called Hollowfication.
The Visored are actually former captain- and lieutenant-level shinigami, and are considered criminals in the Soul Society since getting Hollow Powers is taboo. Ichigo Kurosaki is also considered a Visored himself. Other notable Visored include Kensei, Hachigen, and Love Aikawa.
7. Hollows – The Corrupted Human Souls
Hollows are what happens when a soul’s chain corrodes completely before a Soul Reaper can send it to the afterlife. Once that happens, the soul loses its humanity completely and turns into a monster that hungers for other souls, living or dead.
They usually live in Hueco Mundo but cross over into the human world to hunt. Every normal Hollow has a white mask and a hole somewhere on its body where its heart used to be. Most Hollows aren’t too tough for a decent Soul Reaper to handle, but some grow so powerful they can outmatch even elite fighters.
8. Arrancar – A Hollow Without a Mask
Arrancar are Hollows that took things a step further by breaking off part of their mask. Doing this lets them get some of their old reasoning and personality back, and a lot of them even gain a more human-like body. On top of that, they unlock Shinigami-style powers, including their own version of a Zanpakutō.
Simply speaking, an Arrancar is a Hollow that clawed its way back toward being something closer to human, while still keeping its monstrous roots underneath. This makes them some of the most dangerous enemies in the series, since they combine Hollow strength with Soul Reaper-style combat skills. Grimmjow is probably the most well-known example of an Arrancar, but there are some other notable characters as well, such as Loly Aivirrne and Baraggan.
9. Zanpakutō Spirit – Spirit Embodying a Shinigami’s Zanpakutō
A Zanpakutō Spirit is basically the living personality inside a Soul Reaper’s sword, existing in a separate inner world tied to its owner’s soul. Every Soul Reaper trainee starts out with a blank, unformed sword called an Asauchi, made by Ōetsu Nimaiya, and only after years of hard training does a trainee’s own soul get imprinted into it, letting a distinct Zanpakutō Spirit finally take shape.
Its power works alongside the Shinigami’s own strength, and when a Soul Reaper taps into that spirit’s power on top of their own, their sword gets noticeably stronger. So every Zanpakutō isn’t just a weapon; it’s basically a second character living inside the blade.
10. Modified Souls – Engineered to Reanimate Corpses
Modified Souls were an experimental project made by Soul Reaper scientists trying to build better Hollow-hunting tools. The idea was to stuff these souls into dead human bodies and pump up one specific trait, like speed or raw strength, to create super-powered fighters.
Eventually, Soul Society realized how messed up it was to force dead bodies back into fighting shape, so they shut the whole project down and ordered every Modified Soul destroyed. Not all of them got wiped out, though, and the ones that survived ended up becoming some pretty memorable characters later in the story.
11. Gikon (Artificial Souls) – Mass-Produced Souls Used By Shinigami
Gikon are a kind of artificial spirits that were designed by Shinigami Scientists. They can be used to evict a stubborn soul from a body, as there can only be one soul in a body at a time. The theory behind this is that one can inject foreign Reiatsu into one’s body and turn that power into their own.
However, the actual means of insertion into the body was invented by Kirio Hikifune. She created the entire idea of these and also created the artificial pill called Gikongan, which is also called Soul Candy because the Soul Society Women’s Association wanted it to have a cuter name.
12. Transcendent Beings – Existences That Surpass All Other Races
Transcendent Being is more like a label for characters who broke past the normal limits every other race has. They reached this level in totally different ways, so there’s no single formula for becoming one. The Soul King is the clearest example, since his existence basically holds the whole spiritual world together.
Yhwach gets here by absorbing the Soul King’s power, while Aizen does it through the Hōgyoku instead. Ichigo also counts because he’s a mix of basically every race in the anime at once, which pushes him beyond what any single race could do alone. There is a reason he is the protagonist, not someone else.
13. Bount – Humans Who Feed On The Souls Of Others
Bounts are the result of an experiment that sought eternal life. They live on by consuming the souls of other humans, which is a lot like being a vampire. In fact, in the Bleach universe, the myth of vampires started with the existence of Bounts.
However, they have a rule of only consuming the soul of someone who has died. In fact, it is theorized that they can actually live forever if they keep getting enough souls to consume, which would also mean that the experiment was successful in a way.
14. Toju – Zanpakutō Spirits Wandering Without A Master
Tōjū are Zanpakutō spirits that ended up losing the Shinigami they were originally bonded to. Normally, a Zanpakutō spirit and its owner are linked for life, born together and meant to stay together. But when that bond gets broken somehow, the spirit is left behind with nowhere to go and no one to fight alongside.
Without their master, these spirits end up wandering around lost and confused, since their whole purpose was tied to that one person. It’s basically what happens when half of a matched pair suddenly loses the other half.
15. Blank – Memory-Less Souls Of The Valley Of Screams
Blanks are souls that have completely lost their memories. And since they do not have any memories of their own, Blanks are naturally drawn toward other people’s memories, almost like they’re trying to fill the gap where their own used to be.
This made them useful for one villain’s scheme, where a group called the Dark Ones tried to use Blanks to merge the Human World and Soul Society into one. They planned to lure the Blanks in using Senna, who was secretly the Memory Rosary herself, showing just how dangerous a memory-hungry soul can be in the wrong hands.
16. Togabito – The Chained Inhabitants Of Hell
Togabito are the souls locked away in Hell, and they’re pretty easy to recognize because of the chains wrapped around their entire bodies. These are also the chains that are keeping them down there in Hell. Being sent to Hell isn’t a random punishment either; it’s reserved for souls who did something truly horrible during their lives.
So, unlike a regular Hollow or Plus, a Togabito’s whole existence revolves around being restrained and punished, with no real path back to a normal afterlife as Soul Society offers.
17. Kushanada – The Guardians Who Watch Over Hell
Unlike Togabito, who are trapped in Hell, Kushanāda are the beings responsible for guarding Hell itself, making sure everything down there stays under control. They’re basically the police of the whole system, keeping Togabito contained and dealing with anything that threatens Hell’s order.
Compared to races like Shinigami or Hollows, Kushanāda are more specialized, existing for one job and one job only inside this one specific part of the Bleach universe.
