When it comes to fantasy anime, there is no lack of strong magical sorcerers. Anime loves giving its characters cool sword skills, but the actual ceiling of power is often defined by magic itself. Magic users can rewrite the rules of the universe if they are strong enough after all.
That’s a different tier of broken. This list ranks ten of anime’s most powerful spellcasters based on the actual scale of what their magic can do. Some of these picks might surprise you, so let’s get into it.
10. Frieren – Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Frieren from Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End doesn’t look like a powerhouse at first glance; however, as we saw in the mage examination arc, she is probably one of the strongest anime characters on a human scale. Her clone was able to create black holes in thin air, which alone speaks volumes.
She’s canonically stated to be strong enough to have defeated the actual Demon King, and her mana control lets her cast advanced spells with zero visible effort while opponents are still charging up. However, she doesn’t rank higher because while she has an insane energy output, she doesn’t have skills that break the laws of physics.
9. Ainz Ooal Gown – Overlord

Ainz from Overlord is an undead overlord and one of the most broken spellcasters to ever exist in an isekai anime. As a level 100 Sorcerer, he has access to basically every tier of magic in the Yggdrasil system, including spells that can instantly wipe out armies or summon world-ending monsters.
His real threat isn’t even his raw firepower. Instead, it’s his sheer versatility. He’s got a spell for literally everything. He ranks lower here mainly because he’s still bound by a game-based magic system with defined limits.
8. Orsted – Mushoku Tensei

Orsted from Mushoku Tensei is someone who can give even Rimuru a good fight (more on him later). He’s a Dragon God with centuries of looped memories, meaning he’s essentially fought every major threat in his world hundreds of times over and knows exactly how to beat them.
He has enough power that a single spell from him can level a chunk of a city without breaking a sweat. However, he can’t rank higher because his story keeps him fighting on a human-scale battlefield – and other than going back in time, he doesn’t have any hax. He ranks higher than Ainz because of his sheer spellcasting speed.
7. Julius Novachrono – Black Clover

In Black Clover, Julius commands Time Magic, which is one of the most dangerous magic types in the Kingdom. He can straight-up freeze an opponent’s timeline while he keeps moving freely, basically making fights unwinnable for anyone he targets.
He lands here because Time Magic itself is genuinely one of the scariest concepts in the series, even if his current power level has taken a hit from the story’s events. However, he cannot climb higher because the ones above him have better mastery over time.
6. Tatsuya Shiba – Irregular at Magic High School

Tatsuya is a very unique case in this ranking as his toolkit is not big, but it’s strong. Instead of casting flashy spells, his Decomposition and Regrowth abilities let him break down and reconstruct matter at a molecular level, including things magic isn’t supposed to be able to touch.
He’s shown the ability to erase magic formulas from existence and has combat feats that put him miles ahead of every other student and most adults in his world. Anyone below him can easily be obliterated by him. In fact, he is practically immortal as his body rewinds time back if it is harmed. However, his abilities are not planetary.
5. Goetia – Fate/Grand Order

Goetia is the strongest character in the Fate franchise. He is the fused form of all 72 Demon Gods bound by King Solomon, and as Beast I, he’s built to erase humanity’s entire history, not just beat people up. He commands an overwhelming barrage of magical energy blasts, can regenerate from serious damage, and controls every one of his 72 pillars at once like a hive mind.
It took a coordinated assault from multiple heroic spirits just to bring him down. He ranks this high because his goal alone, deleting human history itself, puts him on a completely different scale from anything below him.
4. Usagi Tsukino – Sailor Moon

Usagi from Sailor Moon might seem like an odd pick next to universe-benders, but her true form, Neo Queen Serenity, wields the Silver Crystal at full power, which is capable of creating entire worlds and resurrecting the dead on a mass scale.
She’s ended cosmic-level threats with pure light-based magic and has canonically saved reality itself more than once. Her strength comes from raw creation and restoration power, not destruction, which makes her one of the few entries here that builds instead of erases – and it’s still terrifyingly strong. Note that her ranking with Madoka is ambiguous, as both have similar feats.
3. Madoka Kaname – Puella Magi Madoka Magica

This is where the ranking gets broken. Madoka from Madoka Magica starts as an ordinary middle schooler, but at the end of the series, she becomes a literal concept. She becomes a being that exists outside of time and space, rewriting the laws of her universe so that magical girls no longer have to turn into witches.
She becomes a goddess. She’s not fighting battles anymore – she’s redefining what’s possible for every version of herself across all of time. That kind of god-tier, universe-rule-changing power is why she cracks the top three here.
2. Rimuru Tempest – That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

Rimuru from Tensura is one of the strongest isekai protagonists. He manipulates probability, space, and even parallel worlds. His magic isn’t limited to spells, as it includes total control over his own existence and the ability to rewrite outcomes that should be impossible to change.
Rimuru has fought and matched beings on a planetary and dimensional scale multiple times. The only reason he’s not first is that this list’s number one pick operates on an even more absurd level of raw magical destruction.
1. Anos Voldigoad – The Misfit of Demon King Academy

Anos’s power is genuinely difficult to put into words. As the Demon King of Tyranny, his destruction magic is strong enough that he casually overwhelmed a being that controls the flow of time using a tiny fraction of his full strength.
He’s recreated worlds, erased curses that were supposedly unbreakable, and treats fights that would end other characters’ animes as warm-ups. The beings he was defeating without breaking a sweat were gods, meaning they were at the level of characters like Madoka and Usagi, which justified his top rank.
