The Golden Globes 2024 are scheduled for January 7th, 2024 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The nominations were announced by Cedric the Entertainer and Wilmer Valderrama. Margot Robbie is not only a first-time Golden Globe nominee but her movie Barbie also secured the title of most nominations at the Golden Globes 2024.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS in the United States. What has caught the public’s eye is a strong contenders’ list for best performance by an actress in a musical or comedy movie. So, let’s find out the nominees.

1. Fantasia Barrino for The Color Purple
Blitz Bazawule directs the American musical coming-of-age period drama movie, The Color Purple from a screenplay by Marcus Gardley. The movie is based on a stage musical of the same name, which was based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel of the same name.
The movie stars Fantasia Barrino who had played the character of Celie in her 20s on Broadway and swore never to play the role again as she described it to be draining and traumatic. But the director was successful in changing her mind and she explained in her cover story for Variety,
“You get to see how she made it through some of this stuff.”
The actress who then reprised the role in the movie is said to have showcased immense commitment to portray it right on-screen.
2. Jennifer Lawrence for No Hard Feelings
Jennifer Lawrence’s movie No Hard Feelings is an American s*x comedy in which the actress’ character is hired by wealthy parents to romance their inexperienced son. The movie received positive reviews from the critics and the audience.
Actress after the nominations for Golden Globes 2024 were announced shared via E Online,
“I had so much fun making No Hard Feelings, it almost feels wrong to accept such an honor but I will. I have Gene Stupnitsky to thank for his hilarious, heartwarming script and direction. Without Gene, Maddie Barker would’ve just been left as a figment of parental nightmares. Thank you to Sony Pictures and to the Golden Globes voters for this recognition.”
Lawrence did not forget to appreciate her co-star Andrew Barth Feldman and added that she treasures their friendship and thanked him for being the only Percy.
3. Natalie Portman for May December
Starring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton, May December is a drama movie directed by Todd Haynes. Loosely inspired by Mary Kay Letourneau and revolves around how Elizabeth travels to meet Georgia known for being in an infamous relationship with her husband, which began when he was 13. The movie received critical acclaim for the performances of the actors and their chemistry.
Upon her nomination for Golden Globes 2024, Portman said,
“I am so grateful to the Golden Globes voters for recognizing Todd Haynes’ May December for Best Picture Musical or Comedy. I am also blown away to be nominated alongside my incredible costars Julianne Moore and the revelatory Charles Melton. It’s a dream to have this film celebrated that we love so much, made by a team we adore.”
Portman added that May December is the first feature at MountainA, a production company Sophie Mas and she started together.

4. Alma Pöysti for Fallen Leaves
Fallen Leaves is a Finnish-German comedy-drama written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki. It is a continuation of his Proletariat series and received positive reviews from the critics and the audience.
Alma Pöysti in her interview with The Wrap shared
“I have been watching his movies my whole life and like everyone in Finland, his work is almost in our DNA. He makes stories that are honest as you can get, but they’re also rough fairy tales for grown ups.”
The actress adds that there is compassion and empathy and standing up for each other in the world which is something they are saying via their movie.
5. Margot Robbie for Barbie
One of the biggest movies this year has been Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Mattel bases the first live-action Barbie on eponymous fashion dolls. It follows Gosling and Robbie’s characters Ken and Barbie on a journey to self-discovery after an existential crisis.
She recently shared with Cillian Murphy via Variety that prepping for the character was weird because her tools didn’t apply.
She said,
“I went to Greta like ‘Help me. I don’t know where to start with this character. And she found this episode on This American Life where it was a woman who can’t introspect, who doesn’t have the voice in her head that’s constantly narrating the life away we all do. “
6. Emma Stone for Poor Things
Emma Stone starred in the black comedy movie Poor Things directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Tony McNamara. The movie revolves around Bella Baxter who after being crudely resurrected by a scientist following her suicide runs off with a debauched lawyer on a journey to self-discovery and spiritual liberation.
The movie received positive reviews from the audience and the critics and Emma Stone’s performance was named as one of the top 10 performances in 2023. Upon her nomination for Golden Globes 2024, she said,
“I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this magical film experience and to have our POOR THINGS family recognized together is a dream. Bella Baxter is my favorite character that I’ve ever had the honor of playing and the journey of making this film is one that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
The actress added that she feels extremely bewildered and thankful for it all.
