“And they really tried to cancel this season”: The Boys Season 4 Has Already Beaten Season 3 Despite Difference in Ratings
The popular Amazon Prime series The Boys‘ fourth season has been premiering. The series shows the dark side of superheroes and makes social statements, which has kept the audience engaged since its first season, which was released in 2019.
The fourth season of The Boys shows the group fighting against evil supes and the powerful Vought International company. The new season contains the violence, dark humor, and socio-political satire that fans of the franchise expect from it.
The Boys Season 4 Breaks Viewership Records Despite Low Reviews
The latest season of The Boys has drawn some discussion and has been met with both positive and negative feedback from viewers. However, it has been a record-holder in terms of viewership. As stated by Amazon (via Variety), season 4 has seen a 21% rise in viewership in the first four days as compared to the launch of season 3. This ranks it alongside five of the most successful TV season premieres in the history of Prime Video, making the show one of the most popular Prime shows ever.
On the other hand, even though it has set a new record for becoming one of the most-watched shows on Prime Video, viewers have polarizing opinions on the series. It is also the lowest-rated season from the audience on Rotten Tomatoes to date, with a 51% audience score. However, this is completely opposite to the critic rating, which is currently about 95%.
The differences between the viewership and rating stats have caused discussions among netizens and viewers regarding the reasons for the review bombing. There is also an argument that the show is trying to be “woke” and has taken a particular political side, along with other complaints about poor plot development.
In contrast to season 4, The Boys season 3 has a Rotten Tomatoes critic rating of 98% and an audience rating of 75%. However, the show has always offered social commentary and political satire, and many fans took to social media to express their appreciation for the new season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Eric Kripke openly confessed that he is not shying away from showing his perspective on the show. He stated,
I clearly have a perspective, and I’m not shy about putting that perspective in the show. Anyone who wants to call the show “woke” or whatever, that’s OK. Go watch something else. But I’m certainly not going to pull any punches or apologize for what we’re doing.
According to Variety, The Boys season 4 has done well outside the US. 60% of its viewers are from outside the US, and Brazil, the UK, and India have the majority of viewers among them. It was the No. 1 title in 160 countries after just four days, which clearly shows its international popularity, especially the performance of Antony Starr’s Homelander.
Eric Kripke Wants Antony Starr to Win Emmy After The Boys Season 4
Antony Starr‘s performance as Homelander has always been getting praise, even amid the ongoing criticism and low reviews by viewers. Kripke has openly admitted that he is surprised why Starr hasn’t received an Emmy yet. In an interview with Variety, he said,
In Homelander’s example, Ant’s ability to give 16 facial expressions when another person gives one is just so astounding. Give that guy an Emmy already. I don’t understand why it hasn’t happened yet.
Homelander has been successful in managing to be the central figure since the inception of the franchise. Starr has brilliantly portrayed the character’s charm, menace, and vulnerability and made him one of the most intimidating villains, and Kripke’s comment just solidified his status even more.
Starr has won the Critics’ Choice Super Awards and has been nominated at the Saturn Awards and the Critics’ Choice Awards, but his performances have failed to earn him an Emmy, which is something both fans and producers have complained about.
As the show goes on, whether it is liked by viewers or not, it always makes people create discussions around it, and most importantly, it creates a huge viewership showing the wicked things happening in its superhuman world.
The Boys Season 4 is now streaming on Prime Video.
