- The lifestyle mogul has a piece of advice for young women who have unfaithful husbands.
Andrew Stewart and Martha Stewart’s whirlwind romance turned into a nightmare shortly after their marriage, even though they remained in the union for decades. The lifestyle mogul has never been big on discussing her private life, but that changed recently as she bared it all in her self-titled Netflix documentary.
One of the topics that she talks about in the documentary is her marriage to her ex-husband. She has stated that he was unfaithful to her as he had had multiple affairs while they were married. However, one thing that he did after their divorce makes us empathize with the businesswoman even more.
Andrew Stewart Did a Rather Awful Thing After Getting Divorced from Martha Stewart
According to Bustle, Martha Stewart and Andrew Stewart met each other for the first time long before she became a lifestyle mogul. She was a 19-year-old student at Barnard College when she got starstruck upon going on a blind date with her classmate’s brother Andrew Stewart, who is a Yale Law School alum.
The couple tied the knot in 1961, and reality started sinking in once they fully immersed themselves in their married life. Parenthood followed in 1965 when they welcomed their daughter Alexis Stewart. The couple separated in 1987 and were officially divorced in 1990.
In the documentary, the TV personality revealed that her husband had quite a few girlfriends throughout their marriage, and in the last few years, she found out that he was in an affair with her assistant, Robyn Fairclough (via Closer Weekly).
Stewart had let Fairclough stay in the guest house and that is exactly where they engaged in the affair while the Martha Stewart Living magazine publisher was away on business. She confronted her husband about it and was willing to fight for their relationship. Her husband, however, wished to end the marriage, which was probably for the best for both of them.
As if the pain of her relationship of almost three decades coming to an end was not enough, she also had to endure the fact that her ex-husband got remarried to Fairclough. The marriage did not last long though and Andrew Stewart got married for a third time to Shyla Nelson Stewart, president and CEO of Fieldstone Publishing, in 2016. On the other hand, Martha Stewart never remarried after the divorce.
Matha Stewart Has Some Advice for Women with Unfaithful Husbands
Stewart was only 19 when she got married. She was too young and crazy in love to tell if getting married was the right thing to do so soon. It’s also important to remember that this was the 1960s, a time when women had fewer opportunities to explore their own paths and make independent choices.
However, she now sees it in a different light and has some advice for young women with unfaithful husbands. She said (via Bustle):
Young women, listen to my advice — if you’re married, and you think you’re happily married, and your husband starts to cheat on you, he’s a piece of sh*t. And look at him as a piece of sh*t and get out of it. Get out of that marriage. But I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t walk away.
This is not to say that Stewart herself was a saint because she admitted that she had also been in an affair with an Irish man. However, she insisted that between the two of them, she was not the first one to cheat, and also believed that he was not aware of her infidelity.
