DC’s Joker is undoubtedly one of the most beloved supervillains out there. The character made its debut in the Batman comics in 1940 and has since managed to maintain incredible relevance. There have been numerous live-action, animation, and TV series adaptations of the character over the years. Both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix won Academy Awards for their respective portrayals of the iconic villain.

The most recent appearance of Joker happened in 2022’s The Batman, which saw Irish actor Barry Keoghan starred as the character. Up until recently, the only appearance of the character was going to be that of Joaquin Phoenix in the 2024 movie. However, it has since been announced that the parody version of the supervillain will be released sooner than the highly awaited Joker sequel.

The People’s Joker Has Finally Got a Release Date

The People’s Joker is a queer coming-of-age parody superhero film that was originally scheduled to be released in 2022. However, that could not happen because the film was withdrawn from screening due to a rights issue. Directed by Vera Drew, the movie parodies several characters from the Batman comics, albeit unofficially, as it has nothing to do with Warner Bros. or DC Studios.

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and garnered mostly positive reviews. Unfortunately, it could not hit the screens for reasons that are unclear. However, luckily, they have finally been solved as it is now scheduled to be released on April 5, 2024.

In the movie, director Drew will be seen as a transgender woman who takes on the titular character of the infamous supervillain. Other actors who will be featured in the film are Scott Aukerman, Tim Heidecker, Maria Bamford, David Liebe Hart, Robert Wuhl, and Bob Odenkirk.

After failing to fit into the only comedy program in Gotham where comedy is outlawed, the aspiring clown Joker the Harlequin, struggling with a gender identity crisis, forms a troupe of misfits and rejects to clash with the city’s caped crusader Batman.

The distributor Altered Innocence acquired the film after it faced copyright issues. The company’s founder Frank Jaffe addressed their acquisition of the film (via Variety), saying:

“Vera Drew has taken her own life experiences and traumas to craft an entirely new genre of cinema that blurs the lines between documentary, coming-of-age film, and parody. We couldn’t be more thrilled to champion this bold, intelligent and hilarious piece of queer cinema that audiences around the globe have fallen in love with.”

In a statement, Vera Drew revealed how personal the movie was, saying:

“This movie started as a D.I.Y. community project for queer artists, and I made it with my friends to process what it was like coming out as a trans woman working in the film and TV industry.”

The successful release of this movie will not be just Drew’s accomplishment, instead, it will be an accomplishment for all those who are attached to the project. Hopefully, the movie will give a great box office performance.
