When we hear The Boys, the first character that pops into our minds is Antony Starr’s Homelander who earned Immense attention from fans despite being the bad leader. However, what many might not know is that the actor almost tried to sabotage his audition for the role.
If Antony Starr had successfully wrecked his audition for the leader of The Seven, then we would have never witnessed him slaying the role of the main foe in The Boys. The acclaimed actor doubted he might not be fit for the role since he believed superhero physiques are what Henry Cavill possesses. However, Starr finally gave the audition for Homelander and the makers were extremely thrilled.
Antony Starr Almost Wrecked His Audition For The Boys
Antony Starr who plays the bad leader in one of the best TV shows The Boys started in 2019, nearly abandoned the role he’s lauded for despite being the antagonist in the series. Starr revealed that he decided to pass on the role in Amazon’s adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series which captivates fans with its intense cruel pleasure. In an interview with Metro UK, Starr shared:
“My reps sent me the script through and said this is one we should look at. I was busy, I was working pretty much every hour under god sent and they called me a week later and said, “Have you read it?” I was like, “No, leave me alone – I’m busy.
The Wish You Were Here star explained that he wasn’t super interested in the part, thinking the maker would never cast him as the role must be secured by someone like Henry Cavill who has an incredible physical appearance that matches the role. He added:
“So I didn’t look at it for a week and a half and then I saw it was a superhero thing and I thought they’re not going to pick me anyway, I’m not made for that. Henry Cavill’s 12 feet tall, built like a 12 foot brick s**t house and he’s wonderful, handsome, and charming – I’m not going to get that.”
Antony Starr doubted he might fail to make his fans shudder with his performance as Homelander, thinking he isn’t fit to play a stereotypical hero. However, the actor, despite doubting himself, gave the audition and the rest is history!
Antony Starr Surprised The Producers While Auditioning for Homelander
Despite each doubt that the Cobweb star had, he auditioned for Amazon’s hit series and indisputably slayed it. Thanks to Starr’s highly persistent representatives who urged him to send an audition tape that earned him a successful and unique role. Antony Starr added in the same interview:
“They were hassling so I sat in my dressing room, picked a spot on my iPad, and filmed this audition almost out of spite for my reps. Then it got to Eric and [my reps] said, “They loved it!” which was surprising.”
The Boys is unlike the stereotypical superhero series which portrays the mighty and thoughtful heroes. They do exist as heroes, but in reality don’t exactly have the most heroic intentions. After the producers loved Starr’s audition they asked him to read the script.
“Then I thought I’d better actually read it. I read it and realized this is actually really good and worth putting some time and energy into.”
Finally, Antony Starr was cast as the complex and ruthless leader of The Seven who pretends to be a charismatic and confident leader in the public eye. Currently, there are three seasons of The Boys which is one of the most successful shows.
The Boys is streaming on Prime Video.
