Aquaman 2: Petition to Remove Amber Heard Crosses 3 Million Signatures
The online petition to have Amber Heard removed from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has now racked up another million signatures in a matter of few more days.
For fans who don’t know, it was earlier reported that the Change.org petition had passed 2 million signatures online. While writing this, that same number is now approaching 3.1 million.
What does this petition say?
“In his $50 million lawsuit, Johnny Depp describes many incidents of domestic abuse that he suffered at the hands of his (then) wife Amber Heard, including one incident where she punched him twice in the face and another where she shattered his finger with a vodka bottle, and his finger had to be surgically reattached,” the petition reads. The petition also cites the 2009 arrest of Amber Heard for domestic abuse against Tasya Van Ree, “demonstrating a repeated pattern of abuse by Amber Heard.”
The lawsuit that has been cited in this ongoing petition is now taking place in Virginia almost two years after Depp had lost a libel case against The Sun over a headline referring to him as a “wife-beater.” A few days later, Warner Bros. also asked the actor to resign from his role in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Now in the current trial, Depp has already testified, while Amber Heard is yet to take the stand.
Amber Heard Has Also Had Issues With Jason Momoa
Heard has played the role of Mera in Aquaman (2018), and it was revealed that she was almost dropped from its sequel, thanks to various chemistry concerns with Aquaman star Jason Momoa. During the ongoing trial, it was also revealed the 2018 op-ed by Heard – which happens to be at the heart of the lawsuit — was specially timed to capitalize on the press of Aquaman, back in December 2018.
Aquaman producer Peter Safran has also commented on the petition to pull Amber Heard from the franchise back in 2021. “I don’t think we’re ever going to react to, honestly, pure fan pressure,” he stated. “You gotta do what’s best for the movie. We felt that if it’s James Wan and Jason Momoa, it should be Amber Heard. That’s really what it was. One is not unaware of what is going on in the Twitter verse, but that doesn’t mean you have to react to it or take it as gospel or accede to their wishes. You have to do what’s right for the film, and that’s really where we landed on it.”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit the theaters in March 17, 2023.
