“At that point in my life, that felt embarrassing”: Kaley Cuoco Was Forced to Lie About Hooking Up With ‘Big Bang Theory’ Co-Star Johnny Galecki
It is always a hot topic of gossip among colleagues about the legitimacy of any romantic relationships that begin at work. While many unwelcome and improper advances occur in the workplace, not all are deserving of such harsh condemnation. This is something that The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki, who dated for two years, can attest to. Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki are among the nicest ex-couples in Hollywood. The two initially met on the set of The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019), where they went on to date for nearly two years while developing an on-screen romance.
Even though their relationship in real life ended, it was depicted in the show as they continued to date and even got married, twice—once in season 9 and then again in season 10. The former co-stars have remained extremely close over the years, despite splitting up and moving on to date different people. Although Cuoco and Galecki’s relationship took place years before the MeToo Movement, there are some doubts about whether the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre, or any of the higher-ups at CBS disapproved of what happened between them.
Why Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki kept their relationship a secret?
In an oral history of the show titled The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series, the co-stars, who dated from 2008 to 2010, discussed how they initially kept their relationship secret from the other cast members. Galecki and Cuoco chose to hide their relationship during a group trip to Comic-Con after first becoming close at a weekend retreat in Montecito.
“Johnny can get really in his head and want to hide, whereas I’m the direct opposite. I would have told everybody the next day at the table read. I would have announced it and said, ‘We’re together!’ But he was like, ‘We can’t tell anyone!’ So, we kept it quiet,” Cuoco told Vanity Fair.
Johnny Galecki partially justified the secrecy by citing the fan response to the on-screen couple’s off-screen relationship. It would be especially important if they ever split up, which they of course did. Galecki said,
“At that time in my life, that felt embarrassing. “I would feel differently about it today. Love is love, and you risk anything and everything for that.”

“But at that time, it was complicated for me, and we didn’t talk about it. And Kaley Cuoco was really respectful of the parameters that I had about it.”
Despite their denials, Cuoco and Galecki began dating behind the backs of their co-stars, producers, and show creator Chuck Lorre.
How did they manage to keep their relationship a secret from the cast?
Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco worked hard for a long time to keep their relationship a secret from the rest of the cast and crew. The two started dating after Cuoco broke up with her then-boyfriend, but they kept their relationship a secret for a long time. Despite being “our closest friends,” as Galecki put it, the two hadn’t yet revealed their relationship to the rest of the cast because it was still so young. He continued,
“We would all be in the hotel lobby, and Kaley and I would hug and pretend to say good night, and then go our separate ways.”
Chuck Lorre, who created the series, eventually learned when Cuoco revealed it to him during a small talk. Amazingly, it took a long time for the public to learn that they had split up, much less that they had ever been together.
