Sam Taylor-Johnson On What Made Her Go Ahead With Marisa Abela For Amy Winehouse Biopic
According to Sam Taylor-Johnson coming up with someone who could embody the free-spirited and vibrant songwriter’s character was a daunting task. During an interview with the media outlet Empire Online, Sam Taylor-Johnson spoke about why she went ahead with Marisa Abela. She said one of the biggest hurdles was to find the perfect face for the legendary singer. She said:
“In most auditions, people would come in either with the head scarf or with a bit of a slight back-comb. Marisa came in as Marisa – absolutely no cat-eye makeup or anything. She was very sweet and very quiet. And then I turned on the camera, and she looks down the lens, and literally, we all just went, ‘What?!’”
She further explained:
“It was all about getting beyond the iconography of Amy, and into her as a person. “We’d seen some brilliant impersonations. But [Marisa] managed to just bring every fibre of her being in alignment with who Amy Winehouse was, and is to many people. She inhabited her.”
