Bad News for Fans Demanding James Gunn Reveal David Corenswet’s Superman Suit Ahead of Movie Release
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy is one of the most highly anticipated movies out of the revamped DC Universe. It will serve as the first movie under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC. David Corenswet will be taking on the cape of the son of Krypton and Rachel Brosnahan will helm the role of Lois Lane.
There is tremendous excitement around the movie and everyone wants to know what James Gunn has in mind for his new Superman. Fans are especially hyped to see the costume details since many think it would be hard to beat Henry Cavill’s ensemble in Man of Steel. However, according to some recent fan interactions, it seems that it might be a while before any official detail is revealed about Superman’s costume.
James Gunn refuses to release details about the Superman suit before filming
It seems like James Gunn’s New Year’s resolution is to keep his fans longing even more, as he recently divulged in a fan interaction that there is no chance of him revealing the Superman suit ahead of filming Superman: Legacy in March 2023. Earlier this week, James Gunn was asked on the Meta platform, Threads:
“What’s the likelihood of seeing what [Superman’s] suit looks like before filming March?”
Gunn replied in a cheeky but matter-of-fact way, saying,
“Zero-point-zero.”
Superman’s suit holds tremendous nostalgia among comic book fans. For many, Superman was their first interaction with a comic book hero and they grew up with the red cape and classic trunks, which might not have sat well with everybody later on. Throughout the years, the suit went through many modifications. Many want the return of the iconic trunks and/or the yellow “S” on the cape, which would teleport them to their nostalgia, whereas many would like to move on from the past. James Gunn would not be able to please both groups, no matter what his vision is. So, the tension is rising to see which way his vision will lean.
What has James Gunn revealed about the new Superman suit so far?
Although Gunn is stingy about any information regarding the Superman suit, he did say a few things from which the Sherlock Holmeses of the DC fanbase can start spawning conspiracy theories. There has been a Cold War on the internet about whether Superman should don his trunks or not. Gunn has previously said that “incredible amounts of concept art with” and without the suit are being made to see which one would be the best fit for DC’s apple of the eye. However, it seems that the suit is almost ready, with the March 2024 filming date approaching.

In December, James Gunn shared that “the costume is mostly done but we’re still going back and forth on some elements.” This should explain why Gunn is so adamant about not revealing the suit prior to filming. The costume is still going through its finishing touches and will only be finalized before DC starts filming. So, the audience must hold their breath for now with the rest of the world before Superman emerges from the horizon with Legacy.
Superman: Legacy is slated to release on July 11, 2025.
