Henry Cavill recently announced he is expecting his first child with Hollywood executive Natalie Viscuso. The news took the world by storm as fans across the globe congratulated the couple and showed them with love. The two started dating back in 2021, and their relationship is now going to the next level as they are getting ready to become parents.
However, what many might not know is that Cavill almost got married years ago when he got engaged to British athlete Ellen Whitaker. Unfortunately, that relationship did not work out and they never got the chance to tie the knot.
Henry Cavill Was Once Engaged to Be Married with Ellen Whitaker
Henry Cavill gained recognition with the lead role of Charles Brandon, the 1st Duke of Suffolk, in The Tudors, which aired from 2007 to 2010 on Showtime. He might have lost the chance to become part of some of the biggest franchises such as Harry Potter, Twilight, and the James Bond film series, but the fact that he was even considered for these roles is a great deal in itself.
Cavill proved his proficiency as an actor when he landed the role of DC character Clark Kent’s alter-ego superhero, Superman, in Zack Snyder’s 2013 movie Man of Steel. Another major thing that happened the same year was his engagement to the British athlete Ellen Whitaker.
The actor’s representative informed PEOPLE about the engagement. According to the outlet, the Belfast Telegraph reported that the couple was on a trip to Hollywood when he proposed to the athlete preparing to make it into the British showjumping team for the Olympics 2012 at the time.
According to PEOPLE, the athlete told the Belfast Telegraph:
“I couldn’t believe it when he asked me to marry him. I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy.”

Cavill allegedly reached out to Whitaker’s father to ask for her hand before he popped the question to her. The answer must have been positive by the looks of it.
Henry Cavill’s Engagement with Ellen Whitaker Did Not Last Long
As fate would have it, The Witcher star broke up with the champion showjumper after three years of dating. According to Glamour, they first met in 2009 at the Olympia International Horse Show. In August 2012, a source confirmed to US Weekly that the two had split secretly.
The source told the outlet that it was a mutual decision. They explained:
“There was no fallout. They just both agreed it wasn’t working. They broke up three months ago.”
The engagement lasted less than a year, but at least the cause for it was not any bad blood between them. Both of them have moved on in their life, and seem to be happy with their partners as Cavill is all set to welcome his first child with girlfriend Natalie Vicuso, and Whitaker shares two children with Spanish showjumper Antonio Marinas Soto.
