It would have been nothing less than a virtual treat if Gosling had played the Clown Prince of Crime in the movie alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn who emerged as a standout character in the critically acclaimed project. According to reports, Ryan Gosling was offered to play Joker but refused due to a lack of interest in committing to a multi-picture deal.

Ryan Gosling Almost Played Joker Alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn

Even before Greta Gerwig cast Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie in their highly acclaimed duo, they almost played an opposite yet thrilling couple. Unlike Barbie and Ken, Robbie and Gosling were all set to play DC’s most toxic and complex couple, Harley Quinn and the Joker until the First Man star rejected the role. However, despite Gosling’s refusal, Robbie secured the role of Harley and she indisputably slayed it.

While it’s extremely fun to envision Gosling as the iconic Joker, due to his prior commitments, the Blade Runner star couldn’t accept the offer to sign a multi-picture deal which was a requirement of the makers. The actor’s history with superhero movies goes back to 2011’s Green Lantern, as before Ryan Reynolds helmed the role, Gosling was considered. According to The Independent, The Notebook star was also considered for playing Doctor Strange in the MCU but the role eventually went to Benedict Cumberbatch.

So, despite not getting featured in superhero movies, Ryan Gosling does have a history related to numerous projects. His recent portrayal of Ken alongside Robbie has given the perfect kenergy to fans, and the duo is another reason why Barbie became this year’s summer blockbuster breaking notable records in the entertainment world.

While it would have been an unimaginable cinematic experience watching Ryan Gosling playing the Joker, the actor doesn’t think that these types of roles are made for him. According to MTV, the Crazy, Stupid, Love star finds it difficult to portray roles like superheroes or formidable foes in movies. Gosling said:

“Those movies are really hard and you have to be a really good actor to do that stuff. To pretend like something’s chasing you that’s not chasing you? All of that stuff, that’s tough.”

The Ides of March star explained why he finds superhero movies challenging and added:

“When you see these big CGI movies, I just think that’s really hard. Those guys are really great actors to convince you that there’s a big monster there that’s not really there.”

Ryan Gosling emphasized the use of CGI in movies that didn’t impress him. However, earlier rumors had that the actor would play Nova in the MCU, to which the Only God Forgives star replied “I was waiting for the Captain Canada call.” (via IMDb). So, if Marvel is ready to launch Captain Canada into the universe, Ryan Gosling will make an incredible superhero.
