Before Her Death, Lisa Marie Presley Supported Will Smith after Eddie Murphy’s Infamous Oscars Slap Joke at Golden Globes
Elvis Presley’s only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley passed away at age 54. She succumbed to a sudden heart attack on January 12, 2023. Her last known public appearance was at the 2023 Golden Globes Award ceremony held on January 11, one day before her untimely death. The night was a special one for her and her mother, Priscilla Presley, as Austin Butler won the Best Actor award for his titular role in the Elvis biopic.
However, one of the last things that the Lights Out singer did before leaving the world was subtly express her support for Will Smith.
Lisa Marie Presley liked a tweet about Will Smith before she passed away
Lisa Marie Presley took to her Twitter account to shed likes on several tweets made about the award ceremony night, especially pertaining to the awards won by her late father’s biopic.
Another tweet that she liked was about a joke made that night about Will Smith‘s slapgate row. The tweet had a picture of the Men in Black star, with the news report caption, “Will Smith in good spirits after Eddie Murphy jokes about infamous Oscars slap at Golden Globes.”
This tweet was about Eddie Murphy’s joke about the Emancipation star during his award acceptance speech. And it was a direct allusion to the infamous 2022 Oscar controversy, where Smith slapped Chris Rock followed by a bout of yelling, for making an innocent joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s baldness. The slap was universally criticized and the Pursuit of Happyness star became an industry pariah. He was even banned from the Academy for 10 years and thus can’t attend any of its events for the next decade. He has since profusely apologized several times through his social media handles.
Eddie Murphy had quite a joke prepared for his award acceptance speech
Eddie Murphy was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2023 Golden Globes, and he had quite an acceptance speech prepared in advance. First of all, he thanked Hollywood Foreign Press Association for bestowing the honor on him. And then he went on to explain what steps he had followed in his life to be successful. The Coming to America star said,
“It is a blueprint and I have followed it my whole career. It is very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business. And keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”
Needless to say, the audience burst out laughing. However, the highlight of the whole thing turned out to be that the Smith family wasn’t reportedly offended, and that is the message Lisa Marie decided to drop her like on.
