Black Widow Explained Why Hawkeye Was Willing To Sacrifice Himself In Endgame
While Hawkeye was extremely desperate to reunite with his family, he was also willing to sacrifice his life in Avengers: Endgame to save the world and Black Widow.
Marvel’s latest release, Black Widow, sheds some light on Natasha Romanoff and Hawkeye’s moment in Avengers: Endgame. After spending almost a decade collecting the Infinity Stones, Thanos finally managed to achieve his goal and his snap affected the remaining Avengers significantly. In the last five years before Endgame, Tony Stark started a family, Steve Rogers held some support group meetings, Thor settled into New Asgard, and Bruce Banner managed to merge himself with the Hulk. But it was Black Widow who led a team to resolve universal threats including Ronin murdering criminals.
What Happened In Vormir?
When the Avengers discovered a way to travel back in time and collect all the Infinity Stones and undo Thanos’ snap, Natasha and Clint bravely proceeded for their mission in Vormir. To get the Soul Stone, a soul has to be sacrificed (a soul for a soul); either Natasha’s or Clint’s soul. Now both wanted to perform this heroic act. While for Natasha, it was all about bringing everyone back together, which has been her priority for the last few years, for Hawkeye, the reason has been somewhat different.
For Clint, the act of sacrificing his life would have redeemed the vigilante life he had led so far. Hawkeye spent the last few years killing criminals out of frustration. He joined the time heist just to bring his wife and children together. But when he was too desperate to bring his family back, why would he sacrifice his life so easily? Well, Clint wanted to save people this time but some parts of it unfolded actually in Black Widow. Knowing Natasha’s intention to sacrifice her life for the good, Hawkeye would have never wanted to just stand still and watch the show.
Black Widow Unfolded Why Clint Wanted To Sacrifice His Life
Black Widow showed Natasha’s Budapest mission with Hawkeye where they were supposed to assassinate Dreykov to defect SHIELD. While both of them were aware that this mission will also take Dreykov’s daughter, Antonia’s life, Natasha still went through it as she believed that it was the only way to take Red Room down. However, both daughter and father survived the attacks but it left Antonia injured. As a result, she then had her body being controlled by a chip that turned her into the Taskmaster. This fueled Natasha’s guilt and that is why she wanted to sacrifice her life on Vormir.
With that said, it seemed like Hawkeye was aware of the Taskmaster and about Natasha’s adopted family – Melina Vostokoff, Yelena Belova, and Alexei Shostakov. Clint knew that between the Avengers and her family, Natasha was needed by a lot of people and her life was significantly beneficial as him staying behind. If nothing at all, Black Widow showed how Natasha as a character had grown and that is why Hawkeye was ready to give up his life for the Soul Stone.
