Blake Lively Reveals Why She Never Watched Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ Before Filming Her Own ‘Horror Shark’ Movie
Blake Lively is certainly one of the best actresses in the Hollywood entertainment industry currently. She has made movies/shows of all kinds, one that deals with snobby rich kids as in Gossip Girls, one that deals with notorious drug dealers as in Savages, and the most thrilling of all, one that deals with a hungry white shark as in The Shallows.
Over the years, many movies have been made in which sharks are represented as the antagonists. One of the most iconic movies made about these flesh-eating beasts is Steven Spielberg’s Jaws which was released in 1975. What’s interesting here is that Lively had not watched the movie before she worked in The Shallows in 2016.
Blake Lively Had Her Reason for Not Watching Jaws
Upon being asked if acting in The Shallows made Blake Lively more scared of sharks or less, she revealed that she used to be so terrified of sharks that she didn’t even watch Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. However, five years before the time of her playing the character, she had gone for a dive with great white sharks which was one of the “greatest experiences” of her life. She also went on to say:
It was really eye opening. You see these creatures in their habitat, not hunting you. They’re just swimming in the ocean. You get to observe them as they are. There’s such a peacefulness to them and such a beauty to them. It was really neat to see them in a humane way rather than see them as monsters.
In The Shallows, Lively is seen in the role of a medical student, Nancy who goes to a secluded beach in Mexico for a trip to emotionally reconnect with her dead mother. The character was trying to run away from her issues which only ended up in her having another issue, the only difference being that this issue was a white flesh-eating shark ready to sink its teeth in any chance it got.

Blake Lively’s The Shallows Has a Deep Message
While most people would watch The Shadows and think of it as just another shark movie, Blake Lively shed light on the message the movie was trying to convey. She made its message crystal clear instead of giving subtle hints or clues for the audience to figure out for themselves. She said:
“It’s really a story of us all trying to survive on this planet. It sounds lofty but when you boil it down that’s what it is. That’s what I really liked about this is that it wasn’t just bikini versus monster.”

Lively also emphasized on the fact that people should not just form an opinion based on what they see. She explained that global warming has caused great white sharks to move to shallow water. People should try to understand why those sharks are attacking on humans instead of blindly villainizing them as it doesn’t do anyone any good.
