Brendan Fraser Wins Hearts Yet Again, Wants To Have ‘Authenticity and Dignity’ in This Cynical World: ‘That’s where the real work is’
American-Canadian actor Brendan James Fraser is best known for his roles in blockbuster movies, comedies, and dramatic movies, most notably The Mummy and George of the Jungle. At the moment, he is being hailed for his upcoming film The Whale. In the wake of his career-best turn in The Whale, Brendan Fraser will “absolutely” undergo another transformation.
The actor plays Charlie, a reclusive gay instructor living alone in a cluttered, airless apartment somewhere in Idaho and overweight in the drama directed by Darren Aronofsky. Despite pushback from critics over not hiring an obese actor, Brendan Fraser’s performance has been praised for his portrayal of Charlie at 600 pounds in the movie. At the Venice Film Festival, Brendan Fraser got a six-minute standing ovation for his performance in his new movie The Whale.
A Powerful Message From Brendan Fraser Wins Hearts
The famous Hollywood actor Brendan Fraser, 53, believes The Whale has a powerful message. During the movie’s premiere in New York City at Venice Film Festival on Tuesday night, the actor told Page Six exclusively that “it’s about kindness and empathy.”
He said,
“We live in a cynical world, and this film is the antidote. It’s easy and cheap to be cynical — it doesn’t take much intelligence at all — but to act with authenticity and dignity, that’s where the real work is.”
Fraser told the outlet that it’s so easy for people to be cruel to one another in today’s world, which he’s experienced first-hand from both movie critics and online trolls.
There is no doubt that Fraser provides a fantastic performance in this critically acclaimed movie; which is already generating serious Oscar buzz; in which he plays an obese, reclusive English teacher named Charlie, who attempts to reconnect with his estranged daughter Ellie, played by Stranger Things actor Sadie Sink.
He has previously stated that his eldest son, Griffin, who has autism, allows him to relate to the issue of obesity. Fraser said in an interview,
“He just turned 20. He’s a big kid, he’s 6-foot-5. He’s got big hands and feet, a big body. I understand intimately what it is to be close to a person who lives with obesity.”
As a result of several personal events, Fraser seemed to pause his career, including the announcement of his divorce from Afton Smith in 2007 and his mother Carol’s death in 2016.
Stranger Things Star Sadie Sink Has Never Seen Any Brendan Fraser Movies
Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, 20, admits she did not know much about Brendan Fraser before playing his estranged daughter in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale.
According to the reports, during the movie The Whale premiere, the 20-year-old actor said,
“To be honest, I hadn’t seen any of his films. I didn’t grow up with his films, of course, now I’ve seen all of them.”
Sink continued about her favorite movie of Fraser and said,
“I love ‘School Ties.’”
She added,
“I think Brendan is brilliant in it.”
In this 1992 drama, Fraser plays a Jewish high schooler attending an exclusive prep school on a football scholarship. He hides his Jewish heritage when he realizes many of his classmates, including Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, are antisemitic.
Some of Fraser’s most memorable early roles, such as The Mummy, Encino Man, and Gods and Monsters, have played on this combination of physical presence and gentle guilelessness. The Whale even extends this contrast by stranding its beautiful soul in a monstrous body, despite all of its gestures towards empathy.
In light of the Academy’s affinity for roles requiring extreme physical transformation, Fraser may win the Best Actor award for his new film The Whale. There is a scheduled release date of December 9, 2022, for this movie in the United States.
